Glorious mornings are ahead if you are an Autumn person like me! 🍂🍁 I love throwing parties and snagging any chance to create something fun and unique, while also delicious!
Last fall, I threw a Harry Potter baby shower and my sorting hat turned out to look like Oogie-Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas, so we just rolled with it! It’s easy to shape and easy to make: ⬇️
Ingredients:
1-2 8oz box Cream Cheese. (Room temp)
1 cup shredded Cheddar Cheese
1/3c cooked bacon, chopped
1 Green Onion (For Chives)
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
Nuts, Optional
Ritz Crackers
Poppyseeds to cover
Instructions:
Mix all ingredients together in small mixing bowl. Shape into a cone and set onto a tray covered with parchment paper, and place in freezer for 1-2 hours, until mildly frozen. Remove from freezer and with your thumb, push slightly to make eye sockets. Then, do the same with the grin, do not over grin Oogie-Boogie. Sculpt the top of the cone shape like a witches hat. Cover generously with poppyseeds and place back in the freezer for 1 hour or until 30 minutes before serving. Remove cheese head from parchment, place on a medium to large charger or serving dish and arrange crackers around Oogi-Boogie.
Great for any time entertaining, but especially for the pumpkin holidays! 👻
... Read moreOkay, so you've got the basic recipe down for this incredible Oogie-Boogie Cheese Ball, and trust me, it's a showstopper every time! I wanted to share a few more tips and tricks I've picked up to make yours even more spectacular and stress-free. After all, the best party food is both delicious AND easy to prepare, right?
First off, let's talk about getting that iconic Oogie-Boogie look. The recipe says not to 'over grin,' and that's key! When you're making the eye sockets and mouth with your thumb, don't press too deeply. You want a distinct indentation, but not so much that it loses its shape. For the eyes, I often use the back of a small spoon to gently widen the thumbprints into more oval shapes. For the grin, think less like a wide smile and more like a slightly mischievous, slightly jagged line. After you've done the initial shaping and freezing, when you press in the features, you can even use a toothpick to refine the edges of the mouth and add those 'stitches' that Oogie-Boogie is famous for. It really brings him to life! And don't be shy with those poppy seeds – they truly give him that burlap sack texture, making your Oogie-Boogie Cheese Ball instantly recognizable.
Now, about serving. While Ritz crackers are a classic and always a hit, don't limit yourself! I love arranging a variety of dippers around my Oogie-Boogie. Think vegetable sticks like carrots, celery, and bell peppers for a healthier crunch, or even different types of crackers like wheat thins or bagel chips for varied textures. Sometimes I'll even add some pretzel sticks, which look great and offer a salty contrast. Placing it on a dark platter really makes the white cheese ball stand out, especially with the black poppy seeds. It creates such a dramatic presentation!
One of my favorite things about this Oogie-Boogie Cheese Ball is how perfect it is for making ahead. Who wants to be scrambling in the kitchen right before guests arrive? You can prepare the entire cheese mixture, shape it, and cover it completely with poppy seeds a day or two in advance. Just keep it tightly wrapped in plastic wrap in the fridge. Then, about 30 minutes before you're ready to serve, take it out to soften slightly, arrange your crackers, and you're good to go! It actually tastes even better when the flavors have a little time to meld.
And for those who might want to try a twist, this recipe is super adaptable! If you're not big on bacon, you could try finely diced sun-dried tomatoes or even some finely chopped roasted red peppers for a different savory note. For a vegetarian option, simply omit the bacon. Want a spicier kick? A pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce in the mix can really elevate the flavor. You could even experiment with different types of shredded cheese – a blend of sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack could be fantastic!
This spooky season, whether you're hosting a full-blown Nightmare Before Christmas party or just a casual gathering with friends, this Oogie-Boogie Cheese Ball is guaranteed to be a conversation starter. It’s not just a dish; it’s an experience! Happy haunting and happy feasting!
This is so good 😍😍
