Maintaining healthy, beautiful locs isn't just about what you do during the day; a solid night time routine is absolutely crucial! I've learned this the hard way over my loc journey. Sleeping on unprotected locs can lead to frizz, lint, breakage, and even unraveling – none of which we want! Before I even think about tying my hair up, I lightly mist my locs with a rosewater and glycerin spray. This helps to rehydrate them without making them soaking wet. Sometimes, especially if my scalp feels a little dry, I'll follow up with a light application of a natural oil like jojoba or argan oil, focusing on my scalp and the length of my locs. I gently massage it in; this step is a lifesaver for preventing dryness and itchiness. Next, I decide how to gather my locs. My go-to is usually a loose pineapple if they're long enough, or a couple of loose braids if they're shorter. The goal here isn't to create a defined style, but to keep them from getting crushed or tangled. For the pineapple, I use a soft scrunchie (never a tight hair tie!) to gather all my locs on top of my head. This keeps them off my neck and face, and helps maintain volume. If I opt for braids, I make sure they're very loose to avoid tension on my roots. The most important step in my routine is protection. Cotton pillowcases are a no-go for locs because they absorb moisture and create friction, leading to frizz and breakage. I always, always, always cover my locs with a satin or silk bonnet.
