Unique things to do on Mount Desert Island, Maine!

3 things to do on Mt Desert Island in Maine that you might not have heard of yet! Everyone knows about all the iconic tourist attractions in Acadia National Park so here are so places that are less crowded even during peak season!

We went disc golfing in the fall and the course was vibrant with fall colors! We went to Acadia Disc Golf at Hapana DGC! It’s only $10 per person for the entire day! Or $8 for 1 round.

Another great activity is walking along ocean path inside the park. This path has beautiful views of Maines coast! While this path is popular and can get crowded, it’s long and there’s so many outlets to stop at, that it doesn’t usually feel crowded!

Echo lake beach on mount desert island is a much less popular beach compared to the famous Sand Beach that everyone wants to visit! Plus Echo beach is fresh lake water instead of ocean water! When we visited in September, we almost had the entire beach to ourselves!

... Read moreIf you're like me, you love visiting popular destinations like Mount Desert Island, Maine, but sometimes you just crave those peaceful moments away from the bustling crowds. I recently explored some incredible spots on MDI that helped me find exactly that, and I can't wait to share my tips for truly unique things to do, especially when you're seeking those glorious unobstructed paths and views! Finding Your Unobstructed Path: Beyond the Main Trails While the Ocean Path is incredibly popular, I discovered ways to make it feel like my own private escape. While walking, I found countless little inlets and rocky cliffs where I could step off the main trail for a few moments. These spots offered truly unobstructed views of the serene blue ocean and the rugged forested coastline, making me feel like I had the whole vista to myself. My top tip? Go early in the morning, especially if you're keen to catch a sunrise – the OCR even mentioned "wake up for sunrise" and it’s totally worth it! The light hitting the rocky shore is just magical, and you’ll encounter far fewer people. Bring a thermos of coffee and just sit, listen to the waves, and breathe in that crisp Maine air. It’s these small detours that transform a popular walk into a deeply personal experience, giving you those sought-after moments of solitude. Disc Golfing in a Vibrant Autumn Wonderland Another activity that really surprised me was disc golfing at Acadia Disc Golf at Hapana DGC. I went in the autumn, and let me tell you, the vibrant forest with its tall trees showcasing stunning orange and yellow leaves made the experience even more spectacular. It felt like playing in a giant, natural art installation! For just $8 a round, it's such a budget-friendly and fun way to spend a few hours immersed in nature. It’s definitely one of those unique things to do on Mount Desert Island that many people overlook. It’s suitable for all skill levels, and there's something incredibly satisfying about navigating through the trees and watching your disc fly amidst such beautiful scenery. If you're looking for an active yet relaxing outing away from the usual tourist hubs, this is it. Echo Lake Beach: A Refreshing Freshwater Alternative When it comes to beaches on MDI, everyone flocks to Sand Beach, but I highly recommend heading to Echo Lake Beach instead. It's a fantastic, less crowded, fresh water alternative that offers a totally different vibe. Imagine a sandy beach with a calm lake, backed by a forested mountain under a clear blue sky – it's incredibly picturesque! I visited in September, and it was so peaceful; we almost had the entire beach to ourselves. The fresh water is so inviting for a swim, and it’s a wonderful place to just relax, read a book, or enjoy a picnic. It’s perfect for families or anyone who prefers the tranquility of a lake over the ocean's waves. These unique activities truly made my Mount Desert Island trip unforgettable, offering both adventure and relaxation away from the typical tourist trails.
