Samurai Learner was born from a simple observation: many newcomer Japanese students understand math, but struggle when it’s taught in English. Lynn, our founder, grew up bilingual in the U.S. and has attended Japanese weekend school since age four. She knew firsthand how challenging it can be to learn math in a second language — and also how exciting it can be when it clicks.
That experience inspired her to create Samurai Learner: a place where students can learn math in English with Japanese support, at their own pace, and truly understand the concepts behind the formulas.

Have you ever stared at a math problem in English and felt your brain freeze, even if you understood the numbers? That was me, especially with terms like "evaluate." It sounds so formal, right? For a long time, I'd just guess what to do or wait for someone to explain it. But once I truly understood what "evaluate" means, it was like a lightbulb switched on! So, what does "evaluate" actually mean in math? Simply put, when a problem asks you to "evaluate" an expression, it's asking you to calculate and find the value of that expression. It’s like being given a recipe and asked to bake the cake – you have to follow the steps and find the final delicious result! You're not just simplifying or rearranging; you're finding a single, concrete answer. This is super important because it's a fundamental step in so many types of math problems. Let's take a common example, just like the one I saw that finally clicked for me: "EVALUATE 6 + 3X WHEN X = 2." At first glance, this might seem daunting if you're not familiar with the terms. But let's break it down step-by-step: Understand the "Variable": In this expression, 'X' is what we call a variable. Think of it as a placeholder, a letter that represents an unknown number. In this specific problem, they've given us the value for X, which is 2. "Substitute" the Value: The next key step is to substitute. This means replacing the variable (X) with its given numerical value (2). So, 6 + 3X becomes 6 + 3(2). Remember, when a number is right next to a variable (like 3X), it means multiplication. Perform the Calculation: Now, you just follow the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS). First, multiply: 3 times 2 equals 6. So the expression is now 6 + 6. Find the Final Value: Finally, add 6 + 6, which gives you 12. So, when you "evaluate" 6 + 3X when X = 2, the value is 12. See? It's not so scary once you know the steps!
