🌊 Jeju Haenyeo Singapore: A Birthday Dinner Unlike Any Other 🎂✨
Celebrated my birthday at Jeju Haenyeo — an immersive dining experience at The Arts House that brought the spirit of Jeju Island all the way to Singapore, and honestly it might be one of the most memorable birthday dinners I've had 🥹
For the uninitiated: haenyeo are Jeju's legendary female free-divers (some diving well into their 80s and 90s!) who harvest seafood without oxygen tanks — a UNESCO-recognised living tradition. This restaurant is the first and only overseas branch of Haenyeo's Kitchen after 6 years in Jeju, and it shows 🙏
The experience:
🎭 Part theatre, part omakase — a multi-course meal paired with live performance, projected visuals & storytelling
🍊 Dishes inspired by Jeju's four seasons, featuring Jeju-imported produce like tangerine geotjeori, seafood stew, and dombe pork
🪨 Served on traditional basalt stone plates — such a nice tie to Jeju's volcanic roots
🎶 Dimly lit, intimate setting with light & sound woven through every course
🎂 They even do special birthday touches for celebrants!
It's less "just a meal" and more a 2-hour journey through Jeju's land, sea, and people. Left feeling like I actually understood a piece of haenyeo culture instead of just reading about it.
Such a special way to spend a birthday 💛 Highly recommend if you're craving something beyond the usual dinner spot!
