tips for grad school interviews

Interview time is coming up soon, so I wanted to give some quick tips that I learned as I went through the process and highlight some of the best pointers I got from others.

For grad school, they really want to know how much you know, so they will ask a lot of questions about your research and class experience. I think just knowing that helps, because it is not like a typical interview where they ask you about your personal strengths and weaknesses etc… The questions are going to be centered around your past research, so make sure you review the details of your past projects so you are prepared.

Knowing their expertise is helpful to know how much they know your topic. That is why it is important to take the time and research who will be interviewing you if it is provided, so that you are answering your questions at the appropriate level.

Lastly, make sure you are still yourself. Ask the questions you have, and do not try to fit a “profile” of what you think they are looking for, Just be yourself!!

Additionally, understanding the interviewers' research interests is equally important; it helps gauge the depth of their knowledge and tailor your responses accordingly. This preparation demonstrates your enthusiasm and understanding of the program. Another key aspect is developing your ability to ask insightful questions. This not only shows your genuine interest in the program but also helps you assess if it is the right fit for you. Questions might include inquiries about research opportunities, faculty mentorship, and the program’s culture. Lastly, remember that authenticity is vital. Don’t try to change your personality to fit a perceived mold. Authenticity can go a long way in making a memorable impression. Incorporating these strategies will enhance your confidence and positively impact your performance during the interview. Good luck, and remember to express your passion for your field!
