day in my life as a graduate student in New York 🩷

I love summer as a graduate student because you have so much flexibility in your schedule and get to do research full time. I get a lot of questions of what this looks like, so here is an example of my day:

Started with a coffee from starbs as a pre-day treat to get me motivated. I know it sounds silly, but I love stuff like this to set my mood and start with a positive attitude. Also this gets me excited to get out of the house and thus start earlier.

I also do the work that requires my most concentration, (so today my reading), first before the day gets crazy. This is my best study tip!

Meetings with my PI during the summer are so important for research! It helps me stay on track, and get my questions answered. The frequency of the meeting depends on the research group, but I'm thankful I get a one on one every week.

Love a little local farmers market to get outside for a brain break and get a healthy treat.

Spending the afternoon in a coffee shop is great for me to get a change of scenery. A late night one is good too because it helps me work longer and help with productivity.

Trader Joes is a must for budget friendly meal supplies! A grad student must!! Also meal prepping is a necessity for grad student life for me.

Finishing the day with exercise is really great for my head space. I like to listen to audiobooks so I am using this time to get fresh air, but also be productive!

And that was my day!!

... Read moreIt's so interesting how many people are curious about a 'day in the life' of a grad student, especially during the summer! While my core routine might seem packed, the beauty of summer research is truly the flexibility it offers. Instead of rigid class schedules, you get to design your own flow, which is crucial for deep work and personal well-being. I've learned a lot about how to make the most of this unique period. For instance, those intense research blocks, like diving into 'complex analysis' or wrestling with 'Mathematica' for new projects, demand uninterrupted focus. My best tip is to front-load these tasks. Getting the hardest, most concentration-heavy work done first, before the day's distractions pile up, makes a world of difference. I often set a timer for 90 minutes of pure focus, then take a short break. It's amazing how much progress you can make when your mind is fresh. Weekly meetings with my PI are another cornerstone of summer productivity. To truly maximize them, I always come prepared with a clear agenda: what I've accomplished, what challenges I'm facing, and specific questions about my 'codes' or experimental design. This isn't just about getting answers; it's about demonstrating progress and getting clear direction for the week ahead, keeping the research momentum going. And oh, the importance of strategic breaks! Stepping away, even for a short while, isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. My trips to the local farmers market aren't just for fresh air; they're a complete mental reset. Changing environments, like moving from my home office to a bustling coffee shop to work on 'codes' or writing, also helps break monotony and can spark new ideas. Sometimes, just seeing different faces and hearing ambient sounds can boost creativity when I'm stuck on a problem. Living on a grad student budget means being smart about expenses, and food is a big one. Beyond just hitting up Trader Joe's for 'meal prep supplies,' I've found that planning my meals for the entire week saves both money and decision fatigue. Batch cooking on a Sunday, freezing portions, and having healthy snacks on hand means I'm less likely to order takeout or grab unhealthy convenience foods when deadlines loom. It’s a game-changer for maintaining energy levels for those long research days. Finally, protecting my headspace is non-negotiable. That end-of-day walk or exercise session, often paired with an audiobook, isn't just about physical health. It's my dedicated time to decompress, process thoughts, and separate myself from the academic intensity. It helps me avoid burnout and ensures I wake up refreshed, ready to tackle another day of research. Finding your own non-negotiable self-care rituals is, I believe, the secret sauce to thriving, not just surviving, as a graduate student.
