Worldly Lies vs Biblical Truth — Communion Edition

The church has been practicing communion for centuries — but have you ever stopped to ask where it actually came from and whether Scripture truly requires it?

The Last Supper was a Passover meal. Jesus broke bread with His 12 apostles the night before the cross and said “Do this in remembrance of Me.” That word — remembrance — comes from the Greek word anamnesis — meaning a memorial, a recollection. Not a ritual. Not a sacrament. A memory act.

The idea that the bread literally becomes the body of Christ did not come from Jesus. It did not come from the apostles. It came from the Catholic Church in 1215 AD — over 1,200 years after the cross — when they declared the doctrine of Transubstantiation. They took the Greek word “estin” — which means represents — and declared it means literally becomes. Then they handed priests the exclusive power to perform that transformation, putting a man between you and God.

Jesus Himself shut this down in John 6:63 — “The flesh profits nothing. The words I speak to you are spirit and life.” He told you with His own words it was never about the physical.

Colossians 2:14 tells us God wiped out every written ordinance and nailed it to the cross. Hebrews 8-10 tells us every ritual and ceremony was a shadow pointing to Christ — and once the real thing came, the shadow was no longer needed. John 19:30 — Jesus said “It is finished.” Not “it is beginning.” Finished.

You do not need a cracker and grape juice to access the presence of God. You do not need to examine your salvation level before approaching His throne. You need the living Word, the Holy Spirit, and faith in the completed work of Christ. That is it. That is enough. That has always been enough.

Protestant churches walked away from Catholic theology but kept the ceremony — then added their own gatekeeping on top of it. Telling you that you must be baptized, must be a member, must feel worthy enough before you can participate. That came from a misreading of 1 Corinthians 11 where Paul was correcting selfish behavior at a dinner table in Corinth — not writing a universal law about who is saved enough to take communion.

This is not an attack on anyone’s faith. This is a call to go back to the original text — past the tradition, past the doctrine, past the institution — and read what Scripture actually says.

“Study to show yourself approved unto God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15

The truth was never hidden. It was just buried under 1,200 years of tradition. Test everything against the Word — not the church.

... Read moreThroughout my personal journey in faith, I've often wrestled with the role of communion and how it fits into the Christian life beyond traditional practices. This reflection deepened after I studied original biblical texts and church history, which confirmed many of the insights shared here regarding communion’s true meaning. One striking revelation for me was the Greek word "anamnesis," often translated as "remembrance." Understanding it as a memorial or a recollection rather than a ceremonial act reshaped how I approach communion. This perspective removes the pressure of ritualistic performance and invites a more heartfelt, spiritual remembrance of Christ's sacrifice. Similarly, learning about the doctrine of Transubstantiation’s relatively late origin in 1215 AD challenged my assumptions about the bread as literally becoming Christ's body. Recognizing that Jesus’ use of the word "estin" more likely meant "represents" rather than a literal transformation allowed me to see communion as a symbolic act, emphasizing faith and the Holy Spirit's role rather than physical elements. Moreover, the reflections on passages like John 6:63, Colossians 2:14, Hebrews 8-10, and John 19:30 helped me grasp the idea that Christ’s sacrifice rendered old rituals unnecessary. This understanding fostered freedom from legalistic gatekeeping concerning who can or cannot partake in communion. Instead, it emphasized a direct relationship with God through faith. In practice, this has encouraged me to focus on internal spiritual renewal and faith in Jesus’ completed work rather than external ceremony or worthiness assessments. It feels liberating to approach God in spirit and truth, relying on the living Word and the Holy Spirit, as John 14:26 suggests. Communion, then, becomes a meaningful, personal remembrance rather than a strict religious obligation. This perspective doesn’t dismiss tradition outright but invites believers to test every teaching against Scripture honestly, ensuring faith remains rooted in biblical truth rather than human inventions. For anyone curious or confused about communion, I encourage exploring these biblical definitions and historical contexts personally, as it transformed my understanding and strengthened my faith journey immensely.

I think this post is a little exaggerated. You can disagree with the Catholic beliefs without having to frame Catholics as liars or enemies of truth. A lot of this ignores centuries of Christian history and comes across more condemning than educational. God bless. 🙏
