Designing AU characters, particularly antagonists, lets you explore so many creative avenues and put your own spin on beloved series. When I set out to create these FMA AU antagonists, I didn't just pull ideas out of thin air. Like many artists, I dive deep into inspiration! For "Pride! Ed (18)," I thought about what makes a compelling villain. I looked at character dynamics from my favorite games and other fan artists to see how they portray darker, more complex personalities. The goal was to make him instantly recognizable but with a fresh, edgy twist for the AU. Every choice matters in character design. For "Pride! Ed," keeping the blond hair but giving him striking red eyes instantly signals a shift in his persona, hinting at his Pride origins. The black crop top, shorts, and patterned arm sleeve were chosen to give him a modern, almost rebellious antagonist vibe, diverging from his traditional FMA look. It's about blending familiarity with novelty. For the other FMA AU antagonist, I aimed for something sleek and mysterious. The short black hair and serious expression contribute to a formidable presence, while the black, form-fitting outfit with a chest cutout revealing a red symbol adds an element of intrigue and power. These details are crucial for telling a story through visuals. The power of digital drawing has been a game-changer for bringing these AU concepts to life.
