The elevator doors closed too fast.
Not dramatic—just enough to make her notice.
She leaned back against the cool metal, heels planted, chin lifted like she wasn’t trapped in a box with the one person she’d sworn to avoid. The hum of the elevator filled the silence, low and intimate.
“Didn’t think you still worked this late,” he said.
She didn’t look at him. “Didn’t think you noticed my schedule.”
A beat. Then his quiet laugh. Dangerous. Familiar.
The elevator climbed. Slowly. Every second stretched. She could feel his presence without touching—heat, restraint, intention. When she finally turned her head, his eyes were already on her mouth.
“Still wearing that perfume,” he murmured. “Drives me crazy.”
“That sounds like a you problem.”
He stepped closer anyway.
Not crowding her. Not yet. Just close enough that her breath caught, close enough that she remembered exactly how his hands felt when he wasn’t holding back.
The lights flickered.
She stiffened. “Don’t.”
“I didn’t touch you.”
“Yet.”
Another flicker. Then the elevator stopped.
Silence slammed down.
Her pulse jumped. She hated that he noticed. Hated that his expression changed—not panic, but focus. Control.
“You okay?” he asked.
She nodded too quickly. “It’s just a delay.”
The emergency lights clicked on, dim and warm, casting shadows that felt intentional. The elevator didn’t move.
Minutes passed.
“You can step away,” she said softly.
He didn’t.
Instead, he braced one hand against the wall beside her shoulder—not trapping her. Giving her space to choose.
Her heart hammered.
“You always do this,” she whispered. “Make it feel like my idea.”
His voice dropped. “You always let me.”
She swallowed.
Then, without looking, she reached past him and pressed the close door button again.
The doors sealed and this time, it wasn’t the elevator that stopped breathing.
