81-84 of 1999 Pokemon Base Set

I haven’t done my completed 1999 Pokemon Base Set in a while so let’s look at the next four. We’re still in the Trainer cards for the four today.

First today at 81 we got the Energy Retrieval Trainer card. With this you can take one card from your hand for two basic energy cards from your discard pile.

Next at number 82 is the Full Heal Trainer card which makes your active Pokemon no longer asleep, confused, paralyzed or poisoned.

Second to last today is the Maintenance Trainer card at number 83. You can shuffle two of your other cards from your hand into your deck in order to draw a card with this trainer card.

Last at number 84 we have the PlusPower Trainer card. This trainer card can add ten more damage to the defending Pokemon.

- Energy Rectrieval Trainer 81/102

- Full Heal Trainer 82/102

- Maintenance Trainer 83/102

- PlusPower Trainer 84/102

To be continued…

... Read moreHaving spent considerable time playing and collecting the Pokémon Base Set, I’ve found these Trainer cards essential to improving gameplay and strategy. The Energy Retrieval card (#81) is incredibly useful, especially when energy cards are scarce in your hand. It allows you to recycle two basic energy cards from the discard pile, helping maintain offensive momentum. Personally, I often use Energy Retrieval to revive energy after devastating attacks or energy sacrifices. The Full Heal card (#82) is a game changer when it comes to status effects. In many matches, being paralyzed or poisoned can drastically reduce your chances of winning. I’ve found Full Heal invaluable to keep my active Pokémon fighting fit, removing sleep, confusion, paralysis, or poison, allowing uninterrupted attacks and flexibility. Maintenance (#83) combines card recycling with card draw, which helps maintain a healthy hand size. Shuffling two cards from your hand back into the deck to draw one new card might sound like a trade-off but in practice, it helps cycle through less useful cards to potentially better options, aiding in adapting your strategy mid-game. PlusPower (#84) is an aggressive card that adds 10 additional damage to your Active Pokémon’s attack. Despite needing to discard it at the end of your turn, I’ve seen matches turn because a single 10 damage boost knocks out an opponent’s Pokémon earlier than expected. This card works wonderfully to finish off weakened foes or when you want to force a quick knockout. Overall, these Trainer cards are compact but powerful tools within the Base Set. They offer versatile options from healing to damage enhancement and card management. Incorporating them thoughtfully into your deck can significantly improve match outcomes and overall enjoyment of the game. Every collector and player of the Base Set should appreciate their strategic potential and the nostalgic value they bring.
