Let’s Get a Room in the 2000s: Super 8 🧳

⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘✌🏾🩵🤙🏾⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘

In the 2000s, Super 8 motels were primarily known for their affordability and no-frills accommodations, catering mainly to budget-conscious travelers, road trippers, and families seeking basic amenities like free breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Since then, the brand has made positive strides by renovating many locations to include modernized rooms, improved amenities, and a more consistent brand experience, appealing to a broader demographic and adapting to changing traveler expectations.

However, some locations still struggle with maintenance and customer service inconsistencies, which can detract from their efforts to enhance the overall guest experience compared to more upscale competitors in the market today.

... Read moreIt's funny how a simple motel stay can unlock so many memories! When I think back to Super 8 motels in the 2000s, it wasn't just about finding a cheap place to crash; it was an experience in itself, almost like stepping into a time capsule. While they weren't explicitly '2000s themed' in the way we think of themed hotels today, their very existence and style perfectly captured that era. I remember the excitement of pulling up to the familiar yellow and black sign, knowing we'd soon be checking in. The lobby often had that distinct smell – a mix of coffee from the breakfast area and a hint of cleaning supplies, always a welcoming sign after a long drive. The check-in process was straightforward, often with friendly faces behind the counter, making you feel right at home even if it was just for a night. Walking down those long, carpeted hallways to find our room – maybe it was room 147, or another number entirely – always built anticipation. And then, opening the door! The rooms themselves were a masterclass in early 2000s practicality. You'd often find a sturdy bed with a patterned comforter, and if you were lucky, a vintage television set that took a moment to warm up, offering just a few basic channels. Forget streaming; it was all about cable TV or perhaps a VCR if you brought your own movies! The wall-mounted air conditioners were loud but effective, a true sign of the times. The amenities, though basic, felt like a luxury after hours on the road. Those tiny bottles of conditioning shampoo and the little deodorant bar in the bathroom were always a welcome sight. And let's not forget the morning ritual: the Super 8 breakfast. It wasn't gourmet, but it was reliable. I can still picture the coffee machines humming, the cereal dispensers, and those trays laden with bagels and muffins. Grabbing a quick bite before hitting the road again was part of the adventure. Today, many Super 8s have undergone fantastic renovations, moving past that distinct 2000s aesthetic. But if you're like me and sometimes yearn for that specific brand of Y2K road trip nostalgia, you can still find pockets of it. Look for independently owned motels that haven't been updated in decades, or smaller chains that prioritize function over modern design. Sometimes, it's about embracing the quirks – the slightly dated decor, the simpler amenities, and the quiet hum of an older AC unit. It's a reminder that travel doesn't always have to be luxurious to be memorable; sometimes, the best memories are made in those unassuming, budget-friendly stays that perfectly capture a bygone era.
