Editing my manuscript for my fiction book!

2024/12/15 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow writers, let's talk about the beast that is manuscript editing! I'm currently deep in the trenches with 'The Lycan Seed Book 1,' and honestly, it's a whole different beast than writing the first draft. That initial burst of creativity is gone, and now it's all about refinement. I used to dread this phase, but I've learned that having a solid plan and a personal checklist makes all the difference. So, what should your personal editing/proofreading checklist actually contain? I break mine down into several passes, because trying to catch everything at once is just overwhelming. The Big Picture Pass (Manuscript Analysis): This is where you look at plot holes, pacing, and character arcs (is Violet’s struggle with her powers consistent? Do the motivations of those mysterious strangers make sense?). I often print out my manuscript and mark it up with different colored pens. I'm looking for scenes that drag, dialogue that feels unnatural, or places where the tension drops. Does the story flow from the prologue to the climax effectively? Is the central conflict—like Violet discovering her world is threatened and targeted—clear and compelling? The Sentence-Level Pass: Now we get granular. This is for grammar, punctuation, word choice, and sentence structure. Are there too many adverbs? Am I repeating certain phrases? This is also where I check for consistency in names, places, and magical elements (like the Lycan seed!). Reading aloud helps immensely here. The Readability & Flow Pass: Sometimes, a sentence is grammatically correct but just clunky. This pass is about making sure the prose sings. Does it draw the reader in? Is it easy to follow? The Formatting & Layout Pass: This is crucial, especially if you're thinking about submission. While some tools, like LibreOffice Writer, have specific style categories, the principles apply everywhere. Things like consistent margins, proper headers and footers (especially for chapter titles or page numbers), and clear paragraph breaks make your manuscript look professional and easy to read. You want to make sure your text is well-presented, whether it's for a beta reader or a potential agent. A clean layout helps keep the focus on your story, not on distracting formatting issues. Beyond the checklist, true manuscript analysis involves stepping back. I love using beta readers for this—they catch things I've read a hundred times. Another technique is to outline your completed draft. See if the structure you intended actually came through. Are there any plot threads, like the secret of the strangers, that get introduced but then forgotten, or conversely, over-explained? For 'The Lycan Seed Book 1,' I'm particularly focused on ensuring Violet's journey and her internal struggles are impactful throughout the story. It's about ensuring every scene serves a purpose and moves the story forward. This is where you might realize you need to add a scene, cut a chapter, or rewrite an entire sequence. Editing can feel endless, but it's where your story truly shines. Don't rush it, trust your process, and remember that every word you polish brings your book closer to its best self. What are your go-to editing tips?
