Stop Making All the Effort

2024/10/2 Edited to

... Read moreI used to constantly feel like I was the one making all the effort in my friendships and even some dating situations. It's exhausting, right? You keep reaching out, planning things, checking in, and sometimes it feels like you're running on empty, always chasing. This feeling of being a 'burnt out pursuer' is something many of us experience, and it's a clear sign that something needs to change. I learned a tough but vital lesson: sometimes, you need to 'fall back a little bit' to truly see where you stand with someone. It’s not about playing games; it’s about creating space for the other person to step up. For too long, I was the one always reaching out, always initiating. I realized I was essentially begging for attention, for connection, and honestly, you 'don't beg where you don't benefit.' Your time and energy are precious, and 'some people don't deserve your time' if they're not willing to invest back. What does it mean to 'fall back'? For me, it meant consciously stopping the constant outreach. No more sending the first text every single time, no more being the sole planner. It's about 'giving that person a chance to make the effort.' It was scary at first, because what if they didn't? But that's exactly the point. The old saying, 'if they wanted to, they would,' really hit home. If the effort is not being reciprocated, then what kind of relationship are you really in? It's a tough pill to swallow when you realize 'why should you be the one to make the effort all the time?' Healthy 'relationships and friendships should be 100% both ways.' If you're giving 100% of your energy and attention and they're not giving it back, then it's not balanced. You deserve connections where your energy is matched, where you feel valued, not constantly drained. It’s about not having to 'beg for love' or attention because it flows naturally. When I started to fall back, I saw things so much clearer. Some connections faded, and while that stung initially, it also brought immense relief. It showed me who genuinely valued me and who was happy to let me do all the work. This isn't about being transactional; it's about self-respect and establishing healthy boundaries. You shouldn't have to chase or constantly prove your worth to anyone. The people who truly care will meet you halfway, or often, even more than halfway. So, if you're feeling that familiar ache of being the one always putting in 'all the effort,' I encourage you to try falling back. Observe their actions. Do they notice your absence? Do they start reaching out? Their response (or lack thereof) will tell you everything you 'need to know' about where you truly stand. It's an act of self-love that clears space for more authentic and reciprocal relationships in your life. Remember, your energy is valuable, and it's okay to protect it.

true, but i notice someone falling back sometimes I'll fall back to avoid being pushy. if someone is talking less to me, I'll assume they don't want to talk me rather than getting closer.
