Growing up in Cuba, many of us were surrounded by stories and beliefs that shaped our understanding of life outside the island. One particularly widespread myth was that "poor children abroad cannot study," a statement that, in my experience, couldn't be further from the truth. Having lived through the challenges of moving to Miami, I witnessed firsthand how education opportunities, while not perfect, are accessible to many regardless of economic background. Unlike the rigid perceptions we inherited, education systems abroad often have programs designed to support disadvantaged youth, including scholarships, financial aid, and community initiatives that aim to bridge gaps. It's important to recognize how myths like these impact our mindset as Cubans living outside Cuba. They can create unnecessary barriers and feelings of defeat before we even try to pursue our goals. Understanding the realities—such as the availability of educational resources and community support—can empower us to take advantage of what is offered and achieve personal progress. Moreover, these myths sometimes fuel division within the Cuban diaspora, adding layers of misunderstanding about life "on the outside."
