How to Measure Jeans

When shopping online or thrifting, it is not always possible to try on jeans. With these measurements, you can compare them to jeans you already own to ensure a perfect fit.

All measurements should be taken on a flat surface with a measuring tape.

1. Waist: To measure the waist, place the front of the waistband even with the back. Place your measuring tape across the waistband. Double that number for the waist measurement. In our example, the waist measures 30".

📝 Note that the waist measurement should not necessarily match your natural waist measurement- where the jeans will sit depends on our next measurement, the rise.

2. Rise: To measure rise, measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. In our example, the rise is just over 9.5".

3. Hips: To measure hips, find the fullest part of the jeans, just under the zipper. Double this number. Our example pair has a hip measurement of 38".

4. Inseam: This measurement will give you the length of the pants. To measure inseam, start at the crotch seam and extend down to the bottom hem. In our example, this will be 30.5".

5. Leg Opening: This measurement will help you assess the style of the jeans- straight leg, bootcut flare, etc. To take this measurement, place your measuring tape along the bottom hem of the jeans. Double this number. In our example, the leg opening is 18".

📝 One last note is to keep in mind the composition of the pants- the example pair is 100% cotton, which means non-stretch. Check the materials in your pair to see if you can expect them to stretch or not.

... Read moreOkay, so you've learned the basics of measuring jeans on a flat surface – that's a fantastic start! But from my own experience, especially when navigating the exciting world of secondhand denim or online finds, there's always a bit more to consider beyond just the numbers. It's about truly understanding what those waist, rise, hips, inseam, and leg opening measurements mean for your body and your style goals. I’ve found that knowing these measurements isn't just for comparing to a pair you own; it's about anticipating how a pair will actually feel and look on you. For instance, the waist measurement is often a flat measurement doubled, but remember where the rise comes into play. A pair with a 30" waist and a 9" rise will sit differently than a pair with a 30" waist and a 12" rise. My personal tip? Always consider the rise alongside the waist to envision if it's a comfortable high-waist, a classic mid-rise, or a trendy low-rise fit for you. This is crucial for avoiding that annoying waistband gap! And let's talk hips. The article brilliantly points out to measure the fullest part. I've learned this helps prevent jeans from being too tight across the rear or thighs. When I'm evaluating fit accuracy for straight jeans against a size chart, I always make sure the hip measurement aligns closely, because a tight hip can throw off the entire silhouette, even if the waist seems right. The inseam measurement is probably one of the most critical for length, especially if you're not planning to hem jeans. I always think about what shoes I'll wear with them. A 30.5" inseam might be perfect for flats or sneakers, but if I want to wear heels, I might look for something a bit longer. Conversely, if a pair has a great inseam but it’s still a bit long, knowing the measurement helps me decide if I can simply roll up jeans for a stylish cuff, or if they truly need professional alterations. Finally, the leg opening provides so much insight into the jean's overall style. A smaller leg opening (like a 9" doubled, so 18" circumference) screams straight leg or slim fit, while a wider one indicates bootcut or flare. This measurement helps me visualize the full silhouette and how it will pair with my existing wardrobe. When comparing your flat measurements to a brand's size chart, remember that these charts usually list body measurements, not flat garment measurements. So, if a chart says "Waist: 28 inches," that's usually your body's natural waist, not necessarily the flat measurement of the jean's waistband. My trick is to add a couple of inches to the flat garment waist measurement (for comfort and fit) and then compare that to the body waist measurement on a size chart. For hips, the flat garment measurement (doubled) should be fairly close to the body hip measurement, allowing for some stretch if the material isn't 100% cotton. Sometimes, even with all these measurements, a pair isn't absolutely perfect. This is where knowing how to alter pants or how to tailor pants comes in handy, or at least knowing when it's worth taking to a tailor. If the waist is just a little too big, but the hips and inseam are great, a minor waist alteration might be all you need. Don't dismiss a great pair of jeans just because one measurement is slightly off – especially if you're thrifting! Knowing your key measurements helps you make an informed decision: "Is this fixable for a reasonable cost?" One last thing I always consider, much like the original article mentioned, is the fabric composition. A pair that’s 100% cotton like the example given will have no stretch, so those measurements need to be spot-on. But if it has elastane or spandex, there's a bit more wiggle room. Always check the label! This knowledge has saved me from many a disappointing online purchase. Happy measuring, and may your denim dreams come true!
