Just like society tries to put non-binary folks into a 'male' or 'female' box, it also tries to simplify the vast spectrum of human attraction. But guess what? It's not that simple, and that's okay! Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of questions pop up about terms like pansexual, omnisexual, and polysexual. It reminds me of the feeling of being non-binary and constantly being asked to explain myself, or facing assumptions like 'is it just a phase?' Just as there's no single 'stereotypical definition' for a non-binary person, there's no one-size-fits-all for attraction. These labels aren't about 'picking a side' between men and women; they're about authentically describing who we're drawn to. So, let's break them down from my perspective. Pansexual: For many, being pansexual means attraction to people regardless of their gender. It’s often described as being 'gender-blind.' This doesn't mean gender isn't *seen*, but rather that it's not a determining factor in attraction. It’s about the person, their personality, their spirit – transcending gender identity. Whether someone identifies as a man, a woman, non-binary, or any other gender, if there's a connection, it's there. It truly embodies the spirit of 'gender expression does not matter' when it comes to who you love. Omnisexual: This identity acknowledges attraction to all genders, similar to pansexuality, but with a key difference: gender does play a role in the attraction. An omnisexual person might have preferences, or their attraction to different genders might manifest in different ways. They see gender and it informs their attraction, but they are still attracted to people across the entire gender spectrum. It's not about being 'gender-blind,' but rather 'gender-inclusive' in a way that recognizes the nuances of each gender. Polysexual: This term describes attraction to multiple, but not necessarily all, genders. For example, a polysexual person might be attracted to non-binary people and women, but not men. Or men and non-binary people, but not women. The 'poly' prefix means 'many,' indicating attraction to more than one gender, but it explicitly leaves room for not being attracted to all genders. It's about recognizing specific patterns of attraction without having to fit into a rigid 'all or nothing' category. I've learned through my own journey as a non-binary person, navigating expectations, that there are 'different struggles' depending on how you present or identify. Just like there's no 'winning' if you don't fit the stereotypical mold of an 'androgynous non-binary person,' there’s often pressure to simplify attraction into binary terms. But these identities – pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual – beautifully illustrate that love and attraction are far too complex and personal for such simple boxes. Ultimately, the whole point is that we just want to exist as we are. Why can't society and people just accept the fact people exist in these diverse, authentic ways? These labels aren't about creating more divisions; they're about finding language that accurately describes deeply personal experiences of identity and attraction, allowing us to feel seen and understood.
