I'm not into men! Non binary and lesbian.

Hey everyone! Following up on my last post about setting boundaries, I wanted to dive deeper into something many of us nonbinary lesbians face: truly navigating queer and lesbian spaces. It's not always straightforward, and I've definitely learned a lot through my own journey. First off, remember your identity is valid and beautiful. As a nonbinary person who is also a lesbian, you bring a unique and important perspective to these communities. Sometimes, it can feel a bit isolating or like you have to explain yourself, but please know you're not alone in that feeling. Here are a few things I've found helpful for navigating these spaces: Seek Out Explicitly Inclusive Spaces: Look for groups, events, or online communities that specifically mention being welcoming to nonbinary, trans, and gender non-conforming individuals within the lesbian or queer community. A quick look at their 'About Us' or event descriptions can often tell you a lot. These spaces tend to be more intentional about pronoun usage and understanding diverse gender identities. Communicate Your Pronouns & Identity: When meeting new people, if you feel comfortable, gently share your pronouns early on. You can say something like, "Hi, I'm [Your Name], and I use [pronouns]!" This normalizes pronoun sharing and helps others use the correct language. If someone misgenders you, it's okay to politely correct them, "Actually, I use they/them," or whatever your pronouns are. It can be exhausting, so don't feel obligated to educate everyone, especially if you're not up for it. Find Your People (Allies & Other NB Folks): Connect with other nonbinary lesbians or allies who actively champion inclusivity. Having a support system of people who 'get it' can make a huge difference. These connections can help you identify truly safe and affirming spaces. Don't be afraid to strike up conversations or join existing discussions online or in person. Trust Your Gut & Set Boundaries (Again!): Just like with DMs, if a space or interaction doesn't feel right, it's okay to step back. Your comfort and safety are paramount. Not every "lesbian" space will be affirming for nonbinary people, and that's not a reflection on you. Focus your energy on where you feel seen and respected. Educate Gently, When You Can: Sometimes, people genuinely don't understand. If you have the energy and feel safe, a brief, kind explanation can go a long way. For example, explaining that 'lesbian' is an identity defined by attraction to women, and nonbinary people can absolutely be women or woman-aligned, and thus identify as lesbians. However, this is your labor, and you're never obligated to take it on. Navigating these waters can be tough, but it's also incredibly rewarding to find your community where you feel truly at home.
