It's a feeling many of us know all too well, isn't it? That nagging doubt that whispers, 'I feel like I can't be femme and non binary because nobody believes you are anything more than a girl.' I've lived with that thought, replaying it in my mind countless times. When I first started exploring my non-binary identity, I felt immense pressure to perform a certain type of genderlessness, or perhaps something more masculine, to 'prove' I wasn't just a girl. But my connection to femininity, to soft fabrics, makeup, and traditionally 'girly' aesthetics, never faded. It created a deep internal conflict and left me feeling isolated. Society often has rigid ideas about what non-binary looks like, and unfortunately, these ideas often erase the existence of femme non-binary people. We're told implicitly or explicitly that if we embrace femininity, we're just women who are confused, or we're not 'non-binary enough.' This is simply not true. Gender identity and gender expression are two distinct things. My gender identity is non-binary, meaning I don't exclusively identify as a man or a woman. My gender expression, on the other hand, can be fluid, but often leans towards the femme side. It's like wearing the same outfit to different parties – the outfit (expression) can stay the same, but the person wearing it (identity) is still fundamentally themselves. Through a lot of introspection and connecting with other incredible individuals, especially online and in queer spaces, I came to a profound realization: you are valid as a femme non binary person. My journey has been about dismantling those societal expectations and internal biases. Embracing my femininity doesn't make me any less non-binary. In fact, for me, it makes my non-binary identity even richer and more authentic. It's about defining gender and presentation on my own terms, not anyone else's. One of the biggest hurdles was unlearning the idea that outward appearance dictates inner truth. For so long, I believed that if society perceived me as female due to my presentation, then my non-binary identity was somehow negated. But I've learned to separate the two. My internal experience of gender is what truly matters, and my external expression is simply how I choose to present myself to the world on a given day. It's a joyful exploration, not a rigid rulebook. If you're out there feeling this same struggle, questioning your validity because your expression doesn't fit someone else's narrow definition of non-binary, please hear this: Your experience is real, and it is valid. Wear that dress, rock that makeup, embrace your softness, your strength, your whole complex self. Your identity is yours, and only yours, to define. Don't let the noise of others' misconceptions drown out the truth of who you are. Finding community with others who share similar experiences has been incredibly affirming. Their stories, and the simple act of being seen, reinforced that I wasn't alone. We are here, we are femme, we are non-binary, and we are beautiful in our authenticity.
