We Weren’t Taught to Speak. But They Will Be.

I was talking to my cousin recently.

She was telling me how she teaches her kids to stand up for themselves. how if someone bullies them at school, they’ll know how to say, “That’s not okay.”

They’ll know how to ask for help.

How to protect themselves with words.

And something about that made my chest ache a little.

Because we were never taught that.

We were taught to be quiet. To not answer back.

To be “good.”To not make things worse. To just take it.

Even when someone was being cruel. Even when we didn’t feel safe. We stayed silent. We tried to disappear.

And now, even as adults, we’re still learning that it’s okay to speak. That protecting your peace isn’t rude. That saying “no” doesn’t make you bad.

It’s hard, sometimes.

To find your voice when no one showed you how.

But hearing her talk about her kids, so gently, so confidently, it made me feel something I didn’t expect..

A little hope. A little joy. Like maybe things are changing.

Maybe the next generation won’t have to unlearn as much.

And maybe, as we teach them softness and strength,

a little part of us gets to heal, too.

... Read moreMany of us grew up in environments where speaking up was discouraged. This silence often stemmed from cultural norms valuing obedience and avoidance of conflict, leaving emotional wounds unaddressed. However, recent shifts in parenting and education emphasize teaching children how to communicate assertively and respectfully, especially in situations involving bullying or emotional harm. Encouraging kids to say "That's not okay" or "I need help" equips them with essential tools for self-protection and emotional resilience. This shift not only fosters their self-esteem but also helps break intergenerational cycles of silence and suppression. Research highlights that children who learn to express their boundaries early on tend to develop healthier relationships and better mental health outcomes. Moreover, learning to protect one's peace and assertively say "no" is integral to emotional intelligence. It reduces internalized stress and prevents the buildup of resentment or trauma. Adults who never learned these skills as children often find it challenging to reclaim their voice, which can lead to difficulties in personal and professional relationships. Healing is not only about teaching the next generation but also about adults unlearning harmful conditioning. The process involves recognizing that setting boundaries and speaking out are acts of self-care, not rudeness or selfishness. This dual healing — both for adults reclaiming their voice and children developing healthy communication habits — creates a positive ripple effect for future generations. The hashtags #innerchildhealing and #MyPOV reflect this journey of self-discovery and transformation, emphasizing the broader cultural movement toward valuing emotional safety and self-expression. Ultimately, teaching children to speak up and stand strong nurtures a society in which kindness and assertiveness coexist, fostering collective healing and growth.

Muscle loss accelerates after 40, but it isn’t inevitable. Strength training helps preserve lean mass, support metabolism, and maintain long-term independence. Previous generations weren’t taught this, we have the knowledge now. Ageing strong is a choice. 💪 #exercise #antiaging #agechallenge
