Add Some Muscle Before You Get Old!

1/8 Edited to

... Read moreAs we age, especially past 70 years old, many people notice a significant loss of muscle mass, a condition known as sarcopenia. This natural decline can lead to weakness, increased risk of falls, and overall diminished quality of life. From personal experience working closely with older adults, I’ve seen how early attention to muscle health can make a tremendous difference. The question, "Why are people over 70 years old usually quite skinny?" can often be answered by understanding the progression of sarcopenia combined with factors like reduced physical activity, hormonal changes, and inadequate nutrition. Muscle loss not only reduces strength but also negatively impacts metabolism, sometimes resulting in unintentional weight loss and frailty. To combat this, incorporating muscle-strengthening activities such as resistance training or bodyweight exercises well before old age is crucial. For example, starting simple routines that focus on major muscle groups two to three times per week can help preserve muscle mass and enhance functional abilities. Nutrition also plays a vital role—adequate protein intake supports muscle repair and growth, while vitamins like D and minerals like calcium help maintain overall musculoskeletal health. From a personal standpoint, encouraging family members and clients to adopt these habits early on pays off by maintaining independence and reducing the need for intensive elderly care later. Additionally, staying aware of changes in muscle and weight during middle age can prompt timely medical or physiotherapy consultations. Ultimately, the message is clear: don’t wait until aging makes muscle gain difficult—start early, stay consistent, and enjoy a healthier, stronger aging process.
