When dealing with a meniscus injury, it’s easy to focus only on flexion and extension exercises for your knee. However, rotating the knee gently is equally important, as the meniscus plays a crucial role in managing rotational forces during movement. From personal experience, incorporating controlled rotational exercises has greatly improved my knee stability and helped prevent further injury. Start by sitting comfortably with your feet slightly in front of your knees. Rotate your tibia inward slowly; this targets the Pes Anserine muscle group which helps internally rotate the tibia and supports the meniscus. Perform 10-20 repetitions per set and complete 2-3 sets. Be sure not to lift your big toe off the ground during this exercise, as maintaining contact ensures the right muscles engage correctly. If you want to increase the challenge, try using a resistance band placed under the big toe. Push your knee outward against the band to engage the muscles supporting internal tibial rotation. Hold for 3 seconds and repeat. This added resistance is especially effective for strengthening the knee joint and protecting the meniscus. In my rehab journey, focusing on these controlled rotations along with traditional knee exercises helped me regain full function and confidence in my knee. Always ensure your knee stays stable during the movement without any pain. If unsure, consulting a physiotherapist to tailor these exercises can optimize your recovery and overall knee health. Remember, training your knee in multiple directions, especially rotation, is essential because the knee naturally moves up to 60 degrees in rotation during activities like sports. Ignoring this can leave your meniscus vulnerable to tears during sudden twists or changes in direction. By integrating these rotation-focused exercises, you effectively ‘bulletproof’ your meniscus, enhancing both performance and injury prevention.
