After our incredible hike up Mandango Mountain, I really wanted to share a bit more about what made it so special, especially since it was our first proper trek with the boys! It truly felt like the whole point of our trip to Vilcabamba was to experience nature like this, getting outside and exploring together. Mandango isn't just any mountain; it's a prominent landmark in Vilcabamba, often called the 'Sacred Mountain' by locals. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding 'Valley of Longevity.' The trail itself is well-marked but can be a bit steep and rocky in places, which definitely adds to the adventure! We chose a path that was challenging enough to feel rewarding but still safe and manageable for the kids, making sure to take plenty of breaks. If you're thinking about hiking Mandango or any other trail with your little ones, here are a few things I learned from our experience. First, pack plenty of snacks and water – seriously, more than you think you'll need! Keeping their energy up and making it feel like a fun picnic adventure really helps. Second, let them set the pace. We stopped frequently to look at interesting plants, listen to the birds, or just enjoy a quiet moment. It's not about reaching the summit fastest, but about enjoying the journey together. Distraction is key! I brought a small magnifying glass for them to examine leaves, and we played 'I Spy' along the way to keep spirits high. Wearing comfortable, sturdy closed-toe shoes is a must for everyone, especially on the uneven and rocky sections of Mandango. Sunscreen and hats are also vital, as the sun in Ecuador can be quite intense, even on cloudy days. We also made sure to teach them about staying on the marked path and not touching unfamiliar plants or wildlife. It’s a great opportunity to teach respect for nature and trail etiquette from a young age. Seeing the boys' faces light up when we reached a viewpoint, and their sheer determination as they tackled steeper parts, was truly heartwarming. They were so proud of themselves when we made it to the top, and honestly, so was I! This hike wasn't just about the physical activity; it was about creating lasting memories, fostering a love for the outdoors, and showing them the incredible beauty of Vilcabamba and Mandango. It's moments like these that make you realize the true 'point' of family adventures. We're already planning our next hike, perhaps exploring more of the stunning trails around Loja. If you're ever in Ecuador, Mandango Mountain is an absolute must-do, especially if you have curious young explorers!
