So glad you're interested in Vilcabamba, Ecuador! While our recent trip took us from Vilcabamba to Loja, I wanted to share a bit more about why Vilcabamba itself is such a special place, and what you can expect if you're planning a visit or a similar bus journey. Vilcabamba, often called the 'Valley of Longevity,' is nestled in the southern Andes and is truly a hidden gem. It's known for its stunning natural beauty, serene atmosphere, and claims of its residents living exceptionally long lives. Many expats, like us, choose to live here for the tranquil lifestyle and mild climate. If you're looking for a peaceful escape with access to beautiful hiking trails and a laid-back vibe, Vilcabamba should definitely be on your list. Now, about that bus ride to Loja! The original post highlighted how beautiful it is, and seriously, it's a feast for the eyes. As the OCR mentioned, for a while, the road between Loja and Vilcabamba, especially through the 'sector de Nangora,' had some issues, and we weren't sure if we'd have to get out and walk! But thankfully, the road is open again, and tourism can fully return to Vilcabamba. This is great news for anyone planning to visit. The journey itself takes you through incredible mountainous landscapes, with lush greenery and winding roads. It’s definitely a journey where you want to keep your eyes peeled for those breathtaking views. I highly recommend grabbing a window seat if you can! Once you arrive in Loja, like us, you'll find a bustling city that's a stark contrast to Vilcabamba's calm. As our OCR noted, Loja is truly the 'ciudad del arte,' with so many incredible murals and statues everywhere you look – it's inspiring! Our 'misión' in Loja was pretty specific – finding a gaming computer office chair! And yes, we also hit up a Supermaxi, which is always an adventure when you haven't been in a while. Plus, a stop at Mega Fiesta for birthday decorations for my son. It just shows you can find pretty much anything you need there. The market in Loja, especially on a Saturday, is an experience in itself. As mentioned in the OCR, it's 'una locura' – much bigger than the one in Malacatos. Even if you're not on a specific shopping mission, just wandering through the stalls, soaking in the local culture, and trying some street food is a must-do. And don't forget to explore the city for lunch; there are so many options, though I admit my 'restaurante favorito' so far is the only one I've tried! Exploring Loja really offers a glimpse into Ecuadorian city life after the tranquility of Vilcabamba. It's a perfect day trip combination. I hope these extra insights help you plan your own adventure to Vilcabamba and Loja!
