... Read moreWow, can you believe my little one, Addison, is already eight months old? Time truly flies! It feels like just yesterday we were bringing her home from the hospital, and now she's a little explorer, constantly on the move. I wanted to share some of the incredible milestones we've been noticing and what you can generally expect around this exciting age. If you're a parent navigating the 8-month mark, I hope our journey can offer some insights and encouragement!
Physically, Addison is a little dynamo. We've officially entered the crawling phase, and it's been a game-changer! She started with a commando crawl, but now she's mastered the classic hands-and-knees approach, zipping across the living room in pursuit of toys – or sometimes, just the cat! If your baby isn't crawling yet, don't worry too much; some babies skip crawling entirely and go straight to cruising, while others might develop their own unique style. What's more important is that they're finding ways to be mobile and explore their environment. We've also noticed her pulling herself up to stand, holding onto furniture. This is such a thrilling step towards walking, and it's amazing to see her determination. Her fine motor skills are also improving rapidly; she's getting much better at the pincer grasp, picking up small pieces of food with her thumb and forefinger – a big step towards self-feeding!
When it comes to cognitive development, it's like a lightbulb goes off every day. Addison is really starting to understand simple commands like "no" (though she doesn't always obey, of course!) and her own name. Object permanence is becoming more evident – if I hide a toy under a blanket, she'll actively search for it, which is adorable to watch. We've been reading lots of board books, pointing to pictures and saying the words, and she seems to be soaking it all in. She also loves playing peek-a-boo, giggling every time I disappear and reappear.
Socially and emotionally, there are some big changes too. We've definitely hit the stranger anxiety phase. While she used to be happy with anyone holding her, now she often prefers Mom or Dad, especially when we're out and about. It can be a bit challenging, but it's a completely normal part of development, showing she's forming strong attachments. On the flip side, her social interactions with us are becoming so much richer. She's starting to wave "bye-bye" (sometimes spontaneously!), claps her hands when she's excited, and loves to babble, trying to imitate sounds we make. We're getting a lot of "dada" and "mama" which melts our hearts every time!
Feeding solids is a fun, albeit messy, adventure. We're past purees and into a wider variety of finger foods. Think soft-cooked vegetables like sweet potato and broccoli florets, small pieces of fruit, and even tiny bits of pasta. It’s all about encouraging self-feeding and exploring textures. Always supervising closely, of course, and making sure everything is safely prepared to prevent choking hazards.
Sleep-wise, we're mostly in a good routine with two naps during the day and a longer stretch at night, though teething can sometimes throw a wrench into things. Every baby is different, so what works for one might not work for another, but consistency with bedtime routines has been our savior.
Seeing Addison grow and learn each day is the most rewarding experience. This 8-month mark is truly a period of rapid development and discovery. I'm so excited to see what new adventures she'll embark on next!
