Best Travel Rewards Credit Card for Beginners

I love finding ways to save money on traveling, and using credit cards and points is a great way to do so. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is my go-to travel credit card. I use it for majority of my purchases and to book travel as the perks are so good and I want to maximize the points I get by using it. This is a great first travel card, especially if you aren’t too familiar with how credit card points work.

Here’s a list of pros and cons of the Chase Sapphire Preferred:

👍Pros:

5X points on travel purchased through the Chase Travel Portal

3X points on dining, select streaming services and online groceries

2X points on all other travel purchases

1X points on all other purchases

Rental car insurance

Great sign-up bonus (75,000 points right now!)

Flexible rewards redemption

Lots of travel partners

Cardholder anniversary bonus (10% of points earned last year)

🤔Cons:

$95 annual fee

Need good or excellent credit to be approved (670-850)

No airport lounge access comes with this card (unlike the Chase Sapphire Reserved)

Overall, I highly recommend this card for anyone looking to start their journey with travel rewards credit cards. Do your own research though, see if this card will work with your life and expenses before applying. If you have any other suggestions for beginner travel cards please share too!

... Read moreAfter using the Chase Sapphire Preferred for a while, I've really learned how to make the most of its incredible travel rewards. It's not just about earning points; it's about smart redemption and understanding the ecosystem. For instance, while the 5X points on travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal is fantastic, I often look at transferring my points to their airline or hotel partners. This is where the "flexible rewards redemption" really shines! Sometimes, you can get a much higher value per point by transferring them to programs like United Airlines, Southwest, or Hyatt, especially for international flights or luxury stays. Maximizing your points doesn't stop there. I personally focus my spending on categories that earn more, like dining out and specific streaming services, to really rack up those 3X points. It adds up quicker than you think! And that sign-up bonus? It's a game-changer. When I signed up, the bonus alone gave me enough points for a fantastic domestic trip, essentially free flights! It’s such a strong incentive for anyone starting their travel hacking journey. Now, about the card's design – I've always appreciated the sleek, dark blue look of the Sapphire Preferred. It feels premium, even if it doesn't grant you airport lounge access like its bigger sibling, the Sapphire Reserve. For me, that's a minor trade-off for a card that offers such strong earning potential and redemption flexibility without a sky-high annual fee. The initial investment of $95 is easily offset by the points earned, especially if you take advantage of the travel portal and partner transfers. Another tip I've picked up is to always check the various travel partners Chase has. They frequently update their list, and sometimes you'll find limited-time transfer bonuses that can boost your points even further. This card truly is a gateway to understanding how credit card points work for travel, and it sets a great foundation for future travel rewards strategies. Just remember to always pay your balance in full to avoid interest charges and keep your credit score healthy. Happy travels!
