Europe Flight Under $50?!?!

This is one of my favorite hacks to do to get cheap flights and I have to share! Airplane tickets can be pretty expensive, so I try to do as much as possible to lower the costs. One of the easiest ways to do that is to get a travel rewards credit card.

I have several different credit cards for this purpose. 1 general, 1 airline specific, and 1 hotel specific. I most recently got the Alaskan Airlines credit card and got the sign up bonus of 70,000 points which is how I booked this flight for ~$50. I also only had to pay 17.5k points for the ticket which is another great deal!

I recommend getting a travel rewards card when there is a good sign up bonus promotion happening and when you have a big expense or two to buy and help you meet the minimum spending requirements.

Credit cards come with pros and cons, so just make sure you are in the position to open one and make the payments in full at the end of each month to avoid any interest/fees

... Read moreMy mind was blown when I realized just how much money I could save on flights to Europe using smarter strategies. While snagging that flight for under $50 was a huge win thanks to travel rewards credit cards, there's even more to know if you're aiming for truly budget-friendly travel. First, let's dive deeper into maximizing those travel rewards. It's not just about the initial sign-up bonus, though that's a fantastic start! After you've earned your bonus points, think about how you can continue to accumulate miles or points with your everyday spending. Many cards offer bonus categories, like extra points on groceries, dining, or travel purchases. Align your spending habits with these categories to supercharge your earnings. For instance, I use different cards for different types of purchases to ensure I'm always getting the best return. Remember how my flight from Dublin to Los Angeles effectively had a $0.00 base fare? That's the power of points! You'll still typically pay for taxes and fees, which for my particular flight came out to about $56, but imagine saving hundreds on the main ticket cost! Always look at the fine print to understand what's covered by points and what you'll pay in cash. My advice? Don't just get one card; consider a strategic mix: a general travel card, an airline-specific card (like my Alaskan Airlines one for that sweet 70,000-point bonus!), and maybe even a hotel card if you travel frequently. Just be diligent about paying off your balance in full each month to avoid interest, otherwise, those cheap flights won't feel so cheap! Beyond credit cards, finding cheap flights to Europe also comes down to smart searching. One of my biggest tips is to be incredibly flexible. If your dates aren't set in stone, you can often find significant savings by flying mid-week instead of on weekends, or by traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) rather than peak summer. Also, don't limit yourself to just one arrival or departure airport. For example, flying into a smaller, less popular airport near your final destination or even into a different European country with good train connections can drastically cut costs. Tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner, and Hopper are invaluable for comparing prices across different airlines and dates. Always use incognito mode when searching to avoid dynamic pricing. When is the best time to book international flights, especially to Europe? While there's no magic bullet, general wisdom suggests booking international travel 2 to 8 months in advance for the best fares. Prices tend to creep up as the departure date gets closer. Keep an eye out for sales from major carriers and smaller, budget-friendly European airlines when traveling between countries. Finally, while my flight was incredibly cheap, remember that flight costs are just one part of your overall budget for a trip to Europe. When considering how much to save, factor in accommodation (hostels, Airbnb, budget hotels), food (eating out vs. cooking), local transportation, and activities. Even with a super cheap flight, a full Europe trip requires careful planning to stay within budget. But with these strategies, you're already off to an amazing start!
