Parenting ADHD - Handling Meltdowns

It’s been almost a year since my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD-C, and let me tell you, this journey has been a real learning curve. Between therapy sessions, parent training, books, videos, podcasts, and talking to other parents, I’ve picked up so much about navigating this new chapter of motherhood.

Meltdowns? They’re still a thing—just not as frequent now that she’s on meds. But when they do happen, walking her through those moments when she’s escalated or overwhelmed is still a challenge. Here are 3 things I do to help calm her down quickly:

1. Switch up the environment

As soon as a meltdown starts, I take her to another room—or outside if we can. The goal is to get her away from whatever’s triggering her and into a space that’s calmer, quieter, and more private. Whether she needs to cry, vent, or just breathe, this gives her a safe space to do her thing.

2. Use physical touch

My daughter’s always been super affectionate, so touch really helps her settle down. Holding her hand, giving her a hug, or rubbing her back works wonders. It’s like it grounds her and lets her know I’m here for her.

3. Just listen

In those moments, I’m not trying to fix anything or hand out advice. I just focus on listening—to her words, her body language, whatever she’s expressing. I’m not solving problems or disciplining her—that stuff can wait. Right now, it’s all about letting her feel heard and supported.

It’s been a journey, but we’re figuring it out one step at a time. If you’re on this ADHD parenthood ride too, know you’re not alone. We got this! 💪🏾💕

... Read moreNavigating parenting with ADHD can be challenging, especially when meltdowns occur. ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, affects children in diverse ways, often leading to emotional outbursts. It's essential for parents to understand that meltdowns are not just due to misbehavior but are often rooted in the child's struggle to cope with overwhelming feelings. Switching the environment plays a crucial role in calming a child during a meltdown. By removing them from triggering situations, parents can help create a safer and more peaceful atmosphere. This approach is backed by research that emphasizes the need for calming spaces to reduce anxiety in children with ADHD. Physical touch has a profound impact, as it fosters connection and reassurance. Choosing comforting physical gestures can help children feel grounded and supported during turbulent times. This method aligns with therapeutic practices that underscore the power of non-verbal communication in de-escalating distress. Listening is perhaps the most critical strategy. By being present and attentive, parents validate their child's emotions, allowing them to express themselves freely. This technique not only helps in calming the child but also promotes trust, which is essential for a strong parent-child bond. Overall, these strategies not only aid in managing meltdowns but also contribute to a positive emotional development in children with ADHD.
