Social Media Algorithms Control Public Opinion: Be

In my book Facts, Filters and Traps,I explain that social media platforms are not neutral tools.

They are active architects of public opinion.

On the surface, they look like open spaceswhere everyone can speak freely.

But behind the scenes, algorithms decidewhat gets promoted,

what gets hidden, and what goes viral.

These decisions are based mainly on engagement,

not on truth, balance, or social responsibility.

Content that creates strong emotions like anger, fear, or excitement is usually rewarded with more visibility.

Over time, this shapes what people think is important,

what they believe is popular, and even what they consider normal.

So even though users create the content, platforms control the distribution.

And in the digital world, distribution is power.

That is why I argue these platforms are not neutral tools.

They actively influence public opinion, political debates, social values, and cultural trends.

My message is not that technology is bad.It is that technology is powerful.

And when we understand how it works,we stop being unconsciously influencedand start becoming conscious, responsible citizens.

You don’t control what you see.But you can control how you think.

... Read moreFrom my experience observing social media trends, it’s clear that algorithms play a critical role far beyond merely organizing content. These systems prioritize posts that trigger strong emotional reactions—especially anger, fear, or excitement—which tend to generate more engagement. This leads to a feedback loop where sensational content spreads rapidly, shaping public perceptions and even cultural norms over time. Many people don't realize that social media is not a neutral space. Although users create the content, it’s the platform’s algorithm that decides how and when that content appears to others. This means the platform subtly steers conversations by amplifying certain voices and suppressing others, often without transparent criteria related to truth or fairness. Understanding this power dynamic is the first step toward becoming a conscious digital citizen. By recognizing that what we see is algorithmically filtered, we can critically evaluate information and avoid being unconsciously influenced. Practicing digital literacy and questioning sensational content helps us maintain a clearer perspective on reality. Moreover, advocating for more transparency in algorithm design and demanding platforms take social responsibility could shift the focus from merely maximizing engagement to promoting trustworthy, balanced information. Until then, controlling how we think and respond to digital content remains our best defense against manipulation in the digital age. In this context, the phrase "You don’t control what you see, but you can control how you think" resonates strongly. It encourages personal responsibility and awareness, empowering users to navigate the complex social media landscape thoughtfully and critically.
