Rules I ditched 💃

Growing up, we’re all fed these “rules” about what women should or shouldn’t do — how to dress, how to act, how to sit, when to speak, how to date… the list never ends. Looking back, I wish I’d ditched some of them way earlier.

What’s one “rule of being a woman” you regret following for too long?

#AskLemon8 #letschat #GirlsTalk

2025/9/5 Edited to

... Read moreGrowing up, many women are conditioned to follow strict societal rules about what it means to be a woman. These rules—covering how to dress, behave, sit, or even speak—often limit personal freedom and self-expression. Many reflect back with regret, wishing they had ditched these rules much earlier in life. For example, one common rule is the expectation to always appear polite and never raise one’s voice, even when standing up for oneself. Letting go of this rule can empower women to communicate assertively without guilt. Similarly, rules around appearance—such as dressing modestly or adhering to certain beauty standards—can hinder authentic self-expression. Rejecting these pressures fosters confidence and individuality. Another frequently regretted rule is the idea that women should prioritize others’ needs over their own, leading to burnout and overlooked personal goals. Learning to set boundaries and place self-care first is crucial for wellbeing. These reflections echo the sentiments shared in the #GirlsTalk and #letschat communities, where women support each other in challenging outdated norms. The question remains: what “rules of being a woman” resonate most with you, and which ones do you wish you had let go of sooner? By sharing experiences, women can inspire each other to embrace freedom from limiting expectations and live more authentic, fulfilling lives. As the conversation grows richer, it helps dismantle stereotypes, promote gender equality, and create a world where everyone feels free to define themselves on their own terms.
