Rating every Broadway show I saw in 2025
Can’t wait to see what shows I’ll get to see in 2026! #broadwaymusicals #broadway #newyorkcity #broadwaytok #broadwayshow
After seeing so many incredible productions last year, I often get asked how I evaluate Broadway shows and what makes one truly stand out. It's not just about the star power or the buzz; for me, it comes down to a few key elements that make a theater experience unforgettable. First, I always look for a compelling story. Is it something that grips me from the beginning, or does it leave me feeling unengaged, like 'Shucked' unfortunately did for me? A strong narrative, whether it's a classic like 'The Lion King' which still brings tears to my eyes, or a thrilling new take like 'Stranger Things: The First Shadow' with its incredible additions, is paramount. The script needs to hold up, even if the staging is spectacular. Then, there are the performances. The cast can truly elevate a production. I remember being so impressed by the ensemble in 'John Proctor Is The Villain,' and Sadie Sink’s performance was particularly captivating. Even in shows with mixed reviews, strong individual performances can make a difference, as I noted with the good performances and cool acrobatics in 'Water for Elephants.' Of course, the music and staging are crucial, especially for a musical. 'The Great Gatsby' absolutely blew me away with its music, performances, and overall spectacle – it felt truly immersive. On the other hand, some shows, like 'Peter Pan,' can feel a bit cheesy or forgettable if the music and production don't quite hit the mark. It's all about how these elements blend to create a cohesive world. When I'm deciding which tickets to buy – often through platforms like Broadway Direct or by trying lotteries and rush tickets – I always do my research. I read other reviews, watch clips, and try to get a feel for the show's vibe. Sometimes a show just isn't for me, and that's okay! My 6/10 for 'MJ' was largely due to the show's structure, even with impressive elements. It's also worth remembering that some shows are Broadway productions, while others are national tours. While both offer fantastic theater experiences, Broadway productions are the original New York City runs, often featuring elaborate sets and original casts. National tours bring these shows to cities across the country, sometimes with slightly adapted staging but still delivering high-quality entertainment. I've seen both, and each offers a unique flavor of the live theater magic. Ultimately, my 'best Broadway shows of 2025' list comes from a very personal place. 'Stranger Things' with its 11/10 rating was a genuine surprise and a masterclass in theatrical effects, while 'John Proctor Is The Villain' was a powerful drama. Even 'Boop! The Musical' was a cute and fun experience that left me smiling. I hope my ratings and these insights help you navigate the fantastic world of Broadway and find your next favorite show!
