so I've started #methotrexate and would love to know how others have felt about it

2024/8/31 Edited to

... Read moreStarting a new medication like Methotrexate can bring up so many questions and feelings, especially when dealing with conditions like Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). It’s completely normal to wonder what others have experienced and what you might expect on your own journey. Hearing from people who’ve walked this path before can offer invaluable comfort and practical tips. One of the most common topics that comes up with Methotrexate is managing side effects. Many people report feeling fatigue, especially in the day or two after their weekly dose. Some find it helpful to take their dose in the evening or before bed to sleep through the initial wave of tiredness. Nausea and an upset stomach are also frequent complaints. This is where strategies like taking your Methotrexate with food, ensuring you're well-hydrated, or even trying ginger supplements can make a difference. Don't forget, your doctor will likely prescribe folic acid, which is crucial for reducing some of these side effects, particularly mouth sores and hair thinning. Remember to take it as directed, usually not on the same day as your Methotrexate. Beyond the more common side effects, some individuals experience what's often dubbed "Methotrexate brain" – a feeling of brain fog or difficulty concentrating. While frustrating, knowing it's a possibility can help you prepare and perhaps adjust your schedule for tasks requiring sharp focus. Regularly communicating with your healthcare team about any side effects you're experiencing is key. They can offer personalized advice, adjust your dosage, or suggest other management strategies to improve your quality of life while on the medication. When it comes to the effectiveness of Methotrexate for Lupus or RA symptoms, patience is often the name of the game. It’s not an overnight fix. Many people find that it can take several weeks, or even a few months, before they start to notice a significant improvement in their joint pain, swelling, fatigue, and other symptoms. It works by slowing down your overactive immune system, which takes time. During this period, regular follow-ups with your rheumatologist and consistent blood tests are essential to monitor how your body is responding and to check liver function and blood counts, ensuring the medication is safe and effective for you. Living with Methotrexate also involves some lifestyle considerations. Alcohol consumption is generally discouraged or heavily restricted due to the potential impact on your liver. Additionally, some people might experience increased sun sensitivity, so diligent sun protection becomes even more important. It's also vital to be vigilant about signs of infection, as Methotrexate can suppress your immune system, making you more susceptible. Always discuss any planned pregnancies with your doctor, as Methotrexate is not safe during pregnancy and requires careful planning for discontinuation beforehand. Ultimately, everyone's experience with Methotrexate is unique. What works for one person might not work for another, and side effects can vary greatly in intensity. Connecting with others and sharing your story, just like you're doing, can create a supportive network. Don't hesitate to reach out to your medical team with any concerns or questions. They are your best resource for navigating this treatment safely and effectively.

I’ve been on methotrexate for 4 months now, it has significantly helped my symptoms of RA, but for me personally the good out weighs the bad, my injection day, and 2 days after I am fully down. Nauseous, sick, head ache, and super tired. I’ve had tons of hair loss, huge loss of appetite, constant headache that weren’t there before, super low immune system. I’m still currently on it, trying to get off, but with that also comes withdrawals. Once I’ve tried coming off the shot, all my pain come right back, more than ever before. The shot helps amazing with managing my pain and symptoms of RA, but for me personally I’ve had lots of side effects. Everyone’s body is different though, I would talk to your doctor first and see how things go for you! Wish you the best of luck, hope this helps some!
