7 best study methods for pre med students ranked by science 🔬🧠 #premed

6/15 Edited to

... Read moreAs a pre-med student, I've found that integrating these seven scientifically proven study methods can make a huge difference in retention and understanding. Active recall is truly the gold standard; by forcing myself to retrieve information without looking at notes, I noticed my memory improved significantly—it's like strengthening a muscle with every practice. Spaced repetition has been a game-changer for me. Instead of cramming, reviewing material at increasing intervals—say Day 1, Day 3, Day 7, and so forth—helped lock concepts in my long-term memory, drastically reducing last-minute stress. The Feynman technique, which involves explaining complex ideas in simple terms, revealed exactly where my gaps in knowledge were. Whenever I stumbled explaining a topic in plain English, I knew I needed to focus more on that area. This method made studying feel more interactive and engaging. Interleaving, or mixing different subjects and topics during study sessions, kept things fresh and enhanced my critical thinking. Pairing this with practice testing was also effective; testing myself quizzes me on the material and helps identify weak spots. Elaborative interrogation—asking why and how things work—and using concrete examples made abstract medical concepts much easier to grasp and remember. I also started using a study app called TikoNote, which combines all these methods. Uploading my notes allowed me to get instant quizzes for active recall and spaced flashcards. The app’s Feynman prompts challenged me to explain and truly understand topics before exams. Avoiding habits like excessive highlighting and rereading, which research shows to be the least effective, allowed me to study smarter, not harder. Incorporating these seven study methods based on science helped me feel more confident and prepared through my pre-med journey.
