5 study methods: most effective and useful ✨📚

With college starting in about a month, I wanted to share my TOP 5 study methods. I was the kind of student who didn't have to study in high school so there was definitely a learning curve when I got to college.

Based on trial and error (lots of error), here are the top 5 studying methods that work for me! Of course, these aren't going to work for everyone. But if anything resonates or draws your interest, I suggest giving it a try!

TOP 5 METHOD RANKED:

📌 No notes assignments

METHOD: Complete homework assignments without using any notes or the textbook. After trying to answer all the questions, THEN go back and reread notes.

WHY I LIKE IT: Trying to draw on just my memory forces my brain to remember things better. It also makes me pay attention better in class bc I know I'll need the info for later.

📌 Study with me videos

METHOD: Use "study with me" videos on YouTube to feel like you're working with someone else. A lot of these will use the pomodoro method so you'll be following that too.

WHY I LIKE IT: I like studying with people but I always get SO distracted. This resembles that without getting me off task. I also love the pomodoro technique.

📌 Repetitive Study

METHOD: Review your notes/material in small increments every day. This repetition keeps the information fresh in your brain and helps you remember things better!

WHY I LIKE IT: I don't like long study sessions and this keeps me from those. I aim for 20-30 minutes per subject a day!

📌 Active Recall

METHOD: Use flashcards or open ended questions to prompt a response. These are typically used daily or every few days.

WHY I LIKE IT: Similar to repetitive studying, it keeps the information fresh in my mind. It also helps me remember things better bc I have to come up with answers myself!

📌 Pomodoro Techinque

METHOD: Work for 25 minutes and then take a 5 minute break. After 4 of these study sessions, then you can take a 15 minute break.

WHY I LIKE IT: Again, I HATE long study sessions. I just can't focus for that long so having these assigned breaks helps me study for longer in the long run!

... Read moreAs college students navigate their courses, finding effective study methods becomes paramount. Here are five highly recommended techniques to maximize study efficiency and retention: 1. **No Notes Assignments**: Challenge yourself to complete assignments from memory first, which strengthens recall skills. This method encourages active engagement with material and leads to deeper learning as you review your notes afterward. 2. **Study With Me Videos**: Leverage the power of community by using study with me videos. These resources create a collaborative atmosphere, allowing students to focus without the distractions that come from friends. The Pomodoro technique integrated in many such videos enhances productivity by balancing study sessions with breaks. 3. **Repetitive Study**: Implementing small, daily reviews of material promotes long-term retention. Rather than cramming, this approach helps familiarize the brain with information steadily without overwhelm. Capping study sessions to about 20-30 minutes per subject prevents fatigue and maintains concentration. 4. **Active Recall**: Engage in self-testing by using tools like flashcards or open-ended questions. This technique improves memory by forcing students to retrieve information rather than simply re-reading. Active engagement is key for effective learning. 5. **Pomodoro Technique**: The Pomodoro method has gained popularity for good reason. Studying for 25 minutes, followed by a 5-minute break, prevents burnout and promotes sustained concentration. Adopting longer breaks after several sessions can refresh the mind. Incorporating these methods into your study routine can yield significant improvements in both retention and understanding. Don't hesitate to experiment with different combinations to find which techniques work best for you on your learning journey!
