... Read moreAs January 13, 2026 approaches, my heart swells with pride and reflection. Founders Day isn't just another date on the calendar for members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; it's a sacred observance, a moment to pause and honor the extraordinary visionaries who paved the way for us 113 years ago. It’s a day that truly encapsulates the spirit and enduring legacy of our beloved sisterhood. For me, it’s a deeply personal experience, reinforcing the bonds and values that have shaped so many lives, including my own.
Thinking back to 1913, when 22 courageous women at Howard University established our sisterhood, it truly humbles me. They envisioned an organization dedicated to public service, scholarship, and sisterhood amidst a challenging era, a time when women and African Americans faced immense obstacles. Their bravery and unwavering commitment laid the foundation for generations of women to rise as leaders, make an indelible mark on their communities, and advocate for social justice. Every Founders Day, I am reminded of their audacious spirit and the immense responsibility we carry to uphold their ideals and continue their transformative work.
For me, Founders Day is a time for deep personal reflection and joyous celebration. It's about reconnecting with our roots, celebrating our shared history, and reaffirming my dedication to our Five-Point Thrust. Many chapters across the globe hold special events, from formal galas and commemorative services to community service initiatives, all designed to honor our heritage and reinforce our commitment to service. I cherish seeing sisters proudly wearing our colors, crimson and cream, and donning our cherished symbols like the majestic elephant and the bold red triangle, which represent our strength, wisdom, and unity. Just like the red triangular earrings I often wear, these symbols are more than adornments; they're badges of honor and a constant reminder of our unbreakable bond.
Being a part of Delta Sigma Theta has profoundly shaped who I am today. It's given me a network of supportive sisters who inspire me daily, instilled in me a passion for advocating for social justice and empowering communities, and pushed me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my life. The bonds forged through sisterhood are truly unbreakable, offering a constant source of encouragement, mentorship, and unwavering support. On Founders Day, I feel an even stronger connection to this incredible legacy, knowing that I am a part of something much larger than myself—a movement that continues to uplift and transform.
As we step into 2026, I look forward to another year of impactful service and leadership. Founders Day isn't just about looking back; it's also about looking forward, envisioning how we can continue to advance the mission of our founders in today's ever-changing world. It's a powerful call to action to continue empowering communities, fostering academic scholarship, and strengthening the bonds of sisterhood that define us. Here’s to 113 years of excellence, sisterhood, and unwavering commitment, and to many more years of making a difference! Happy Founders Day, Sorors! ❤️🐘🔺
