Hey beautiful people! You know I'm obsessed with contouring, and it's truly one of my favorite ways to sculpt my face. But before you even pick up that contour stick, I know a question many of us secretly ask ourselves is: 'Are my cheekbones high?' I used to wonder about this all the time, and understanding my own face shape really changed my makeup game. So, let’s figure it out together! The easiest way to determine where your cheekbones sit is by a simple touch test. Place your fingers on your face just below the outer corner of your eyes. Now, gently slide them downwards and inwards towards your nose. You'll feel a prominent bone structure – that's your cheekbone! Follow it along towards your hairline. Now, let's talk about what 'high' means. Generally, if your cheekbones are located closer to your eyes and relatively high on your face, extending towards your temples, you likely have high cheekbones. These often create a more angular, defined look and can give the appearance of a perpetually lifted face. Think supermodels! If your cheekbones sit lower, closer to the bottom of your nose or even around the corners of your mouth, they're considered low. And if they're somewhere in between, that’s considered a medium placement. There's no 'best' type, just different features to celebrate! Why does knowing this matter for makeup, especially contouring? Well, once you know where your natural structure lies, you can strategically apply your contour and highlight to enhance what you have or create the illusion of what you desire. For example, if you have naturally high cheekbones, a little contour directly underneath them will really make them pop and look even more prominent. If you have lower cheekbones, you might want to apply your contour slightly higher than where the bone naturally sits, almost on top of it, and then blend downwards to create a lifted effect. My personal hack for creating the illusion of higher cheekbones, even on days I feel like my face looks a bit flat, is to focus on both contour and highlight. I start by drawing a very thin line of a cream contour stick just under the most prominent part of my cheekbone, extending it towards my hairline. Then, I blend, blend, blend upwards and outwards. The key is to keep the darkest part of the contour underneath the bone to create that shadow. After that, I take a shimmery highlight and apply it directly on the highest points of my cheekbones, blending it towards my temples. This combination of shadow and light truly makes them appear lifted and more defined. Don't be afraid to experiment!
