Design smarter (not harder), even on Canva free ✨
When I first started using Canva, I felt like I was constantly chasing that clean, polished look—but something always felt… off. The spacing would be slightly different, the colors would feel mismatched, and I’d get overwhelmed starting from scratch every time.
But these three small tricks completely changed that for me—and I’m still on the free plan!
1. Use the Brand Colors tool (even on the free version)
Canva Free lets you save up to 3 brand colors. That might not sound like much, but it helps so much with consistency. You don’t have to memorize hex codes or re-select every color in every post.
Bonus tip: when you upload a background image, Canva will automatically pull out the key colors from the image. It’s a fast way to build a palette that actually fits the vibe of your post.
2. Design your first slide fully, then duplicate it
If you’re doing something like a carousel with a shared background (like a storytime post), design your first page fully—get the fonts, layout, shadows, spacing, and alignment just right.
Then duplicate that page and just change the text. This saves so much time and makes your content feel more cohesive.
3. Canva now lets you mix page sizes in the same design
Thanks to a recent update, you can now design for multiple platforms in a single Canva project. So instead of opening separate files for TikTok, IG Stories, and Pinterest, you can keep them all in one place.
This is a huge time-saver and makes repurposing way easier—especially if you’re creating from your phone like I am.
These little discoveries have made Canva feel way less intimidating—and helped me keep designing even on the days I feel a little stuck.
If you’re on the free plan too, save this post to try later! And if you’ve found any good Canva tricks, I’d love to hear them in the comments!
