I just went to a restaurant where the server spilled our drinks on the table and didn’t clean it up or apologize, and then brought us dirty silverware.
When you go out to eat, it’s reasonable to expect basic care and professionalism. If the service is genuinely poor, a tip shouldn’t be automatic.
This isn’t about being stingy or not valuing service work, it’s about decency. Customers shouldn’t feel pressured to reward an experience that felt careless or dismissive.
Tipping culture often tells us 20% no matter what, but that expectation didn’t come from customers, it came from systems that rely on tips instead of paying fair wages.
At my own job, treating people poorly wouldn’t be acceptable, and tips aren’t even part of the equation!

You even mention companies not paying a livable wage to their employees yet still choose to support said company by being a patron there. Why is your entitlement more important than someone also just trying to make a living in the situation they’re in? You’re there to frivolously spend money while they’re there to try to earn an income and God forbid they’re not perfect enough for your gold plated dollar bill? When I see posts like this, I instantly have empathy for the waitress that has to deal with the customer before I have empathy for the person complaining about going to an establishment who’s industry is WELL KNOWN for tipping culture, and then crying about said tipping culture. It’s just crass behavior that you felt so strongly about you had to take to social media for validation. You don’t want to tip for whatever reason, that’s between you and the waitress. But from this side of the story, you immediately become the assumed problem customer that just can’t be pleased by any means necessary. If I go out to eat, it’s a minimum 20% tip, even for poor service. Because I understand it’s not just ME working for hard earned money and I grasp the concept of human error. It’s called humanity and it’s value holds much higher than the tip your inciting people to hoard. During the holidays nonetheless. 🤢 Money will come and go but once humanity is lost, no amount of money can replenish it.
