How I healed my skin barrier🧴🧼

I ruined my skin barrier a couple months ago and this is how I healed it!!

1️⃣ Distilled water:

I live in a city with hard water and switching to washing my face with distilled water CHANGED my skin.

2️⃣ Benzyl peroxide and micellar water:

Double cleansing with these two products leaves my face clean clean. Plus Benzyl peroxide is an acting fighting ingredient. (Be careful it will bleach clothes and towels)

3️⃣ ROSEWATER:

Anti- inflammatory, anti-aging, and fights acne.. need I say more😭

4️⃣ Toners:

Korean skincare is too good. The Acewell toner gets rid of ALL of my acne scars and tightens my pores. The Anua is soo hydrating.

5️⃣ Moisturizers:

Vanicream in the morning and La Roche-posay at night.

6️⃣ KIDS Black Girl Suncreen:

I should make a separate post about this suncreen because it’s too good!! It’s made for kids so it’s gentle on the face and it gives you the most beautiful glow without feeling greasy. Go get it rn!

DISCLAIMER: these products are what work for me but every skin is different. Always patch test and implement products one at a time so if your skin gets irritated you know which product did it.

... Read moreHey skincare fam! Following up on my journey to heal my skin barrier, I wanted to dive deeper into some of the practices and products that truly made a difference. When your skin barrier is compromised, it feels like everything irritates your skin, right? It's a tough cycle, but trust me, healing is possible! Let's talk about distilled water skincare. Before, I always wondered why my skin felt tight and irritated after washing, even with gentle cleansers. Turns out, my city's hard water was the culprit! It contains minerals that can leave a film on your skin, altering its pH and making it harder for your barrier to function. Switching to distilled water for cleansing was a game-changer – it felt instantly softer and less reactive. I simply keep a gallon jug by my sink and use it to rinse my face after cleansing. It might seem extra, but for sensitive, damaged skin, it’s a small step with huge benefits. Next, let's discuss double cleansing with micellar water and benzoyl peroxide. For me, this combo was essential for clearing stubborn acne without further irritating my already fragile barrier. Micellar water, like the one I use, is amazing for gently lifting makeup and impurities without harsh rubbing, prepping my skin without stripping it. Then, I follow up with a gentle cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide. The key is to use it strategically and not overdo it. Benzoyl peroxide can be drying, so pairing it with hydrating steps is crucial. If your skin barrier is very damaged, consider using BP as a short contact therapy (apply, leave for a few minutes, then rinse). This allows the active ingredient to work without prolonged exposure. Speaking of hydration, those Korean toners are truly a blessing for a compromised skin barrier. My Acewell toner helped fade those persistent acne scars and refined my texture, while the Anua one delivered intense hydration that my thirsty skin desperately needed. These toners are designed to layer moisture and prepare your skin to better absorb subsequent products, creating a plump, healthy canvas. They feel like a comforting hug for your skin! Now, for moisturizers and sunscreen – the ultimate power duo for barrier repair. A good moisturizer is non-negotiable when healing your barrier. Vanicream in the morning is simple, effective, and free of common irritants – perfect for sensitive skin. At night, I rely on La Roche-Posay. Many of their products are formulated with ingredients that help replenish the skin's natural barrier, such as ceramides and niacinamide. While I don't have rosacea myself, I've heard from many with sensitive skin, including some general practitioners, that La Roche-Posay is often a go-to for soothing irritation and supporting a compromised skin barrier. It’s always wise to consult a doctor for specific conditions like rosacea, but for general barrier support, it’s a fantastic option. Finally, the Kids Black Girl Sunscreen. Sun protection is paramount when your skin barrier is healing. UV damage can set back your progress significantly. This sunscreen is a dream because it’s formulated for kids, making it incredibly gentle and non-irritating. No white cast, just a beautiful, dewy finish that doesn't feel heavy or greasy, which is so important when you're already dealing with skin issues. Remember, everyone's skin is unique. Always patch test new products and introduce them one at a time. Listen to your skin – it will tell you what it needs. Healing your skin barrier is a marathon, not a sprint, but with consistency and the right products, you can achieve that healthy, glowing skin you're dreaming of. You've got this!
