Historical Background
The tower was built after a fire destroyed the old Palace of Westminster in 1834. The new palace was designed in Gothic Revival style by architect Charles Barry, with the tower’s detailed design by Augustus Pugin.
The clock mechanism was completed in 1859 and quickly became renowned for its remarkable accuracy, an exceptional achievement for the 19th century.
The tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
