The second week of our trip will be visiting my family back in the countryside
Golden week is a cluster of Japanese holidays like Showa day, greenery day and children’s day
Many Japanese people get days off during this time so it is a highly anticipated holiday period. on top of foreigners traveling there are far more Japanese people traveling domestically
Visiting Japan during Golden Week offers a unique experience that blends vibrant city life with intimate family moments. Having traveled to Japan during this peak holiday period, I found that it is a time when the entire country seems to be on the move—families visiting relatives, friends catching up, and travelers exploring both iconic and lesser-known destinations. One of the things that stood out during my visit was the extensive domestic tourism. Unlike other busy travel seasons dominated by international visitors, Golden Week sees a surge of Japanese people heading to various parts of the country. This internal movement creates a lively atmosphere but also means popular spots can get especially crowded. However, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to witness the local culture in full swing, from traditional festivities honoring Showa Day and Children's Day to the lush greenery celebrated on Greenery Day. A highlight of my trip was visiting family in the countryside during the second week. This quiet side of Japan offered a peaceful contrast to the busy cities and reminded me how much the country cherishes its rural heritage. It was also interesting to see how communities prepare for Golden Week events, with local markets and small celebrations that create a warm, welcoming environment. Traveling with someone experiencing Japan for the first time adds another layer of excitement and responsibility. Introducing them to both the fast-paced urban culture and the gentle countryside traditions requires careful planning. For instance, timing the trip to enjoy less crowded experiences ahead of Golden Week can maximize enjoyment and minimize stress. Additionally, understanding local customs such as proper toilet etiquette, which sometimes can be a challenge for travelers, made our stay more comfortable. I learned how important these small details are in respecting the local culture and enhancing the travel experience. Golden Week is not just about holidays; it’s a window into the heart of Japan’s communal spirit and seasonal celebrations. For anyone planning a trip during this time, embracing both the well-known festivals and the quieter family moments will provide a rich and memorable journey.
