Juneteenth

The imagery captures a profound truth that resonates deeply every June 19th. Across the top, the word "FREEISH" stands bold and distressed, resting above the year 1865 and a pair of shattered chains. Re-imagined in the red, white, and blue of the Juneteenth flag, it serves as a stark reminder of a complex history.

Juneteenth is often celebrated as "Black Independence Day," but underneath the parades and unnecessary federal holiday recognition lies a foundation of systemic distrust, generational trauma, and an enduring fight for true equality.

To understand why Juneteenth is recognized as Black Independence Day, one must look at the timeline of American freedom. The Fourth of July celebrates America’s independence from British rule in 1776—a time when millions of Black people remained enslaved, legally classified as property.

When Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, it took effect on January 1, 1863. Yet, it wasn't until June 19, 1865—two and a half years later—that Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the freedom of the remaining enslaved population.

For 900 days, human beings were kept in brutal, illegal bondage simply because the news was withheld, and the power to enforce the law was absent.

This historic delay birthed a foundational distrust. From the very beginning of "freedom," the message was clear: a law on paper does not guarantee protection, justice, or liberty for Black Americans.

When people ask why the African American community can’t "just get over it," they overlook the fact that the end of chattel slavery was not the end of systemic oppression. It was merely the beginning of a mutated version of it. 1865 was followed by:

The Black Codes and Jim Crow Era: Decades of legal segregation, disenfranchisement, and state-sanctioned terror.

Economic Redlining: Systemic denial of mortgages and resources that prevented generations of Black families from building wealth.

The School-to-Prison Pipeline: Mass incarceration systems that disproportionately target and impact communities of color.

As the text at the bottom powerfully states: "NOT FREE. NEVER WAS. NOW WE FREEISH." You cannot "get over" a system of disenfranchisement that is still actively operating. True freedom is not just the absence of physical chains; it is the presence of equal opportunity, justice, and systemic safety—elements that are still being fought for today.

Making Juneteenth a federal holiday was a step toward historical acknowledgment, but symbolism cannot replace systemic reform. When the holiday is commercialized without addressing the wealth gap, voting rights restrictions, or criminal justice reform, it deepens the feelings of distrust within the community.

Juneteenth is a day of profound resilience. It honors ancestors who survived the unimaginable and celebrated their freedom even when it was delayed. But as we look at the red, white, and blue of the Juneteenth flag the image reminds us that the promise of America remains unfulfilled for all its citizens. Until "free-ish" becomes unconditionally free, the reflection, the anger, and the fight must continue.

... Read moreJuneteenth holds a deep, multi-layered significance that goes far beyond the celebrations and parades we often see every June 19th. From personal experience, recognizing Juneteenth as more than just a symbolic holiday has been eye-opening. The phrase "NOT FREE. NEVER WAS. NOW WE FREEISH." powerfully encapsulates the reality that although physical chains were broken, the fight against systemic barriers continues. Growing up, Juneteenth was a day of family gatherings and cultural pride, but as I learned more, I realized it represents a collective history of struggle, resilience, and hope. The delay in emancipation enforcement in places like Galveston, Texas, meant thousands lived in brutal bondage even after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This historic neglect fostered a deep-seated mistrust in legal protections that still lingers today. I have witnessed how the legacy of the Black Codes, Jim Crow laws, and policies like economic redlining have shaped unequal access to wealth, education, and justice within Black communities. These systemic issues feed into generational trauma, making the journey from “freeish” to truly free uneven and ongoing. Personal stories shared within communities highlight how economic disparities, lack of voting rights, and disproportionate incarceration rates keep many African Americans from experiencing the freedoms often taken for granted. Juneteenth isn’t just a celebration—it’s a call to remember these obstacles and renew the commitment to systemic reform. Incorporating the Juneteenth flag’s red, white, and blue symbolism into reflections reminds me that the American promise of liberty remains incomplete. True freedom requires equal opportunity, justice, and safe communities that the holiday encourages us to strive for every day. For anyone seeking to honor Juneteenth authentically, understanding this complexity is crucial—not only to commemorate the past but to actively support the ongoing fight for racial equity and justice.
