Creating a series of 4 season paintings is one of the most rewarding journeys an artist can embark on. Starting Your 4 Season Painting Journey Before diving into individual seasons, think about the overall narrative. Are you painting the same scene through the year, or different landscapes that embody each season? I often choose a general theme, like a forest edge or a rolling hillside, and adapt it. Acrylics are fantastic for this because they dry quickly, allowing for layering and quick changes. Spring: The Awakening Landscape Spring paintings are all about freshness and new beginnings. My color palette shifts to soft greens, pastel yellows, and delicate blues. I focus on capturing the gentle light filtering through new leaves and the budding flowers. Think light, airy brushstrokes and translucent layers to suggest the softness of spring rain or misty mornings. I often use a very diluted green for the first wash to create a sense of new growth, building up brighter, more vibrant greens as the painting progresses. Summer: Vibrant Hues and Strong Light Summer scenes demand a bolder approach. The greens are richer, the blues of the sky deeper, and the sunlight creates stark contrasts. I love experimenting with strong highlights and deep shadows to convey the intensity of midday sun. When painting summer, I use more opaque layers of acrylics to build up lush foliage and vibrant floral elements. Don't be afraid to use bright yellows and oranges for sun-drenched areas and deep purples or blues for the shadows to create that striking contrast. Autumn: A Blaze of Glory This is perhaps my favorite season to paint because of the dramatic color changes. Autumn landscapes are a riot of reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. The key here is not to just throw color on the canvas, but to understand how these colors blend and transition. I often start with a warm underpainting, using burnt sienna or yellow ochre, and then layer on the vibrant reds and oranges, allowing some of the underpainting to show through for added depth. Textural brushstrokes can help convey the feeling of fallen leaves and crisp air. Capturing the golden hour light in autumn is magical – it makes everything glow. Winter: Serene and Subtle Beauty Winter 4 season painting requires a shift to cooler tones and a focus on form and texture, rather than vibrant color. My palette typically includes various shades of blue, grey, and white, with hints of muted greens or browns for bare trees. The challenge is to make snow look interesting, not just flat white. I achieve this by using subtle shadows in blues and purples to define its contours and reflect the sky. Bare branches provide excellent opportunities for intricate detail, and a low, weak winter sun can cast long, intriguing shadows. Don't forget the crispness of the air, which can be suggested by a very light, cool wash over distant elements. Painting the four seasons is an incredible exercise in observation and color theory.
