I'm Lost in My Career Pathway

❓️Did someone ever ask you, "So, what's your five-year plan?" And you just stared at them blankly? Yea... same here. 😓

⏳️ Growing up, remember when the main question you were asked was- "What do you wanna be when you grow up?" and you said "A doctor/lawyer/engineer..." JUST because that's what seemed like the "ideal" job?

💭 Let's be real- We probably just said that because THAT is what's been REPEATEDLY taught to us; that THESE careers are the main categories, and you SHOULD choose between them, or you won't be financially stable in life.... Like, haven't we ALL been told this before!? 🤔 Maybe indirectly!! But, come on now... I KNOW you've been told this at least once!☝️And we all know that there's NO way ALL of us would fit into categories like these, or that we simply have an interest in them in the first place... 😒

🫂 But the thing is for most of us, we choose our career path based on what our close family members have pursued into. ❓️Maybe it just feels safer? ❓️Maybe you can easily network within that field site to families having close connections to groups/organizations? Who knows! 🤷‍♀️ And well... it works out for MANY people, and that's TOTALLY awesome!! 💯✨️

📊👥 But then, there are people like me- Our families might've had to work and grow on their own, so they (most likely) don't have those connections to certain groups. And it's probably because they went through the SAME situation as us and are experimenting with what careers THEY would be best suited in. 🧪🥼 And... that DEFINITELY doesn't help us! I mean, it just makes things more harder, right? 😵‍💫 It becomes a WHOLE cycle until finally, we all settle into our own niches and environment. 👩‍💻

😖 But the thing is, we're CONSTANTLY being pressured to have our lives ALL figured out at a VERY young age, ESPECIALLY when it comes to careers. But when you really think about it, who KNOWS what the future holds! ⏳️

🎧📖 I've listened to numerous amounts of stories all coming from DIFFERENT people 👥 who've said that they had a WHOLE different plan graduating 🎓, but ended up doing something TOTALLY different in the end, and they couldn't have had it ANY better than how it is now! 😌

🌐🫂 In the comment's section, let’s all connect and share our experiences with eachother! 💞

❓️🤔 Maybe you’ve been there, maybe you’re there now, and/or maybe you’ve found your path; whatever it may be! We would all certainly LOVE if you could share any advice, tips, words of encouragement, or even just a relatable thought or idea! 🧠💡

2024/12/5 Edited to

... Read moreIt's easy to feel overwhelmed when everyone seems to have their entire 'future career' mapped out, while you're still wondering "what do you want to do with your life?" Many of us, myself included, often look for a quick fix or even an 'app' to provide clear direction for career navigation. While structured tools or assessments can offer a starting point, true clarity often emerges from a more holistic approach that blends self-discovery with practical exploration. One of the most powerful steps you can take is to really lean into self-reflection. Instead of chasing what others deem 'ideal' (like being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer), take time to genuinely understand your own interests, values, and strengths. What activities truly energize you? What problems do you love solving? What causes are you passionate about? These insights are your internal compass, more reliable than any external pressure to have a perfect 'five-year plan.' Journaling, talking to trusted friends, or even working with a career coach can help uncover these hidden insights. Beyond introspection, active experimentation is key. If you don't have family connections in a field, go out and create your own! Informational interviews are incredibly valuable—reach out to people whose jobs sound interesting and ask for 15-20 minutes of their time to learn about their daily work, challenges, and what they love. This is a low-commitment way to test the waters and build your network. Volunteering, taking online courses, or even picking up a new hobby can expose you to new skills and environments, helping you discover what resonates and what doesn't. You might find a passion you never knew you had, or rule out paths that seemed appealing from a distance. Mentorship can also be a game-changer for navigating career uncertainty. Find someone a few steps ahead of you in a field you're curious about, and ask them to share their experiences. They don't have to be a formal mentor; sometimes, just having someone to bounce ideas off of or learn from their mistakes can provide immense clarity and encouragement. Their journey might reveal that it's okay not to have it all figured out, and that many successful people have taken winding paths to get where they are. Remember, your 'future career' isn't set in stone. The world of work is constantly evolving, and so are we. It's okay for your path to change, diverge, or even feel completely lost at times. The goal isn't to find the perfect career, but to find a path that aligns with who you are *now*, while remaining open to growth and new opportunities. Embrace the journey of discovery, and trust that with each step of self-reflection and experimentation, you're actively building the life you want, even without a rigid 'five-year plan' in hand.

From the jump. It was planned for me to go to school and be a doctor. Well, during my first year (getting all the basic courses done before the actual major) I was slowly realizing that I didn’t even want to be one. I was only doing it so others would be proud of me. Plus I couldn’t handle the course work and later the stress and responsibilities that come with it. I’m more of a creative person and honestly still trying to figure things out.
