Stay Flexible with These Stretches
Does your body feel tighter than it used to? I struggle to split like I used to back in my cheer days.
Is your range of motion less than before? Is your neck tight like mines? lol. No shame! We all get busy and stop stretching. It’s never too late. Mobility can always be improved with consistent effort.
Try to make it a regular practice to stretch your body to enhance your flexibility.
How to stretch effectively:
1. Ease into your pose
2. Hold for 30 seconds
3. Release your hold
4. Repeat the pose with more exaggeration if possible
5. Hold for another 30 seconds
6. Release
After stretching, sit Indian style and rest your body for a moment before leaving your space. Breathe. Notice how relaxed and flexible your body feels.
Stay flexi,
Jau 💚

Hey everyone! Building on the idea of consistent stretching for better mobility, I wanted to dive into some of my absolute favorite stretches that have personally helped me unlock deeper flexibility, especially in my hips and back. You know that feeling when your body just doesn't move like it used to? I've been there! These specific poses, many of which you might have seen in the images, are key players in my routine. 1. The Butterfly Stretch (Seated Soles Together) This one is a classic for a reason! It’s fantastic for opening up your hips and stretching your inner thighs. To do it, sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together, knees bent out to the sides. You can hold onto your feet with your hands. Gently let your knees fall towards the floor. For a deeper stretch, you can lean forward slightly, keeping your back straight. I love how this stretch feels like a gentle release after a long day. Remember to breathe deeply here; don't force your knees down, just let gravity do its work. 2. The Pancake Stretch (Wide Legs Forward Fold) This stretch is a game-changer for hamstring and inner thigh flexibility, and it's a crucial step if you're aiming for full splits! Sit with your legs spread as wide as comfortably possible, keeping your toes pointed up. Engage your quad muscles to keep your kneecaps pointing up too. Then, slowly hinge forward from your hips, reaching your hands out in front of you. The goal isn't to touch your chest to the floor immediately. Focus on keeping your back flat and feeling the stretch in your hamstrings and inner thighs. I often use a yoga block or pillow under my hips if I find it hard to keep my back straight, or a cushion to sit on to tilt my pelvis forward. It makes a huge difference! 3. Deep Squat for Hip Mobility This isn't just an exercise; it's a fundamental human movement that many of us lose. A good deep squat, like the one shown, is incredible for hip and ankle mobility. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, or slightly wider, toes pointing slightly out. Slowly lower your hips down as if you're sitting in a very low chair, keeping your heels on the ground. Aim to get your hips below your knees. You can press your elbows against your inner thighs to gently open your hips further. I find holding this deep squat for 30-60 seconds helps to really loosen up my entire lower body, especially if I’ve been sitting for a while. 4. Side Lunge Stretch (Lateral Flexibility) This stretch targets those often-neglected inner thigh and groin muscles, along with your hip flexors, providing amazing lateral flexibility. Start standing with your feet wide apart. Shift your weight to one side, bending that knee into a lunge while keeping the other leg straight and grounded through the heel. Ensure your bent knee doesn't go past your toes. You'll feel a significant stretch along the inner thigh of your straight leg. Repeat on the other side. This one feels so good for releasing tension after dynamic movements or just improving overall lower body suppleness. 5. Open Chest & Shoulder Stretch (Hands Clasped Behind Back) Opening up your chest and shoulders is vital, especially if you spend a lot of time hunched over a computer or phone (guilty!). A simple yet powerful way is to stand or sit tall, then interlace your fingers behind your back. If you can't interlace, just grab opposite elbows. Gently lift your clasped hands away from your body, squeezing your shoulder blades together. You'll feel an amazing release across your chest and shoulders. This builds on movements you see in the Open Chest Pigeon or Cow Face Pose, promoting better posture and alleviating upper back tightness. Working Towards the Splits: Many of you, like me, might dream of achieving the splits! It's a journey, not a destination, and consistency is truly your best friend. Incorporating the Pancake stretch, as well as hip openers like the Pigeon stretch (which you can see in one of the images), and focusing on hamstring flexibility will get you there. Remember to listen to your body, never push into pain, and celebrate every inch of progress. Flexibility isn't about perfection; it's about feeling good in your body and moving freely. Keep at it, and you'll be amazed at what you can achieve!

I’ll have to work my way up to some of this, especially the splits, but I’ll do my best!
