💜 Mini Must-Knows
1. Check storage often → Settings > General > Storage

Hey everyone! 👋 You know that feeling when your Mac starts slowing down, taking ages to open apps, or just generally feeling sluggish? I definitely do! For the longest time, my MacBook felt like it was drowning in digital clutter, and honestly, it was stressing me out. I finally decided enough was enough and dove into a serious decluttering session, and wow, what a difference it made! Beyond just a quick storage check, which is super important (like seeing my 'Starting Storage' was higher than I liked!), there are a few extra steps I've learned that truly help keep your Mac running smoothly and feeling fresh. It's not just about what you delete, but how you manage your digital life. First off, let's talk about those sneaky files that pile up. My downloads folder used to be a graveyard of forgotten installers, PDFs I only needed once, and random images. Taking the time to go through it, sort by date or size, and just hit 'Delete unwanted Photos and files' was a huge win. And my desktop? Oh, the icons! I realized a clean desktop isn't just aesthetically pleasing; it actually helps your Mac perform better. Try to keep it minimal and use folders for temporary items. Then there are all those large files you might not even remember. Did you know you can use Finder's 'search' function to look for files over a certain size, or files older than a specific date? It's a game-changer! I found so many old project files and videos that I no longer needed on my main drive. Move them to an external hard drive or cloud storage if you want to keep them, but get them off your primary disk. And those 'apps' we download on a whim and never use again? They're not just taking up space; sometimes they have background processes running. Properly uninstalling them by dragging them to the Trash from your Applications folder is a good start, but some leave behind residual files. For a deeper clean, you might need to hunt down their support files in your Library folder (be careful here!) or consider a dedicated uninstaller app for truly stubborn ones. The original guide mentioned deleting unused apps, and trust me, it’s one of the easiest ways to free up significant space. Photos and videos are the biggest culprits for many of us – myself included! After seeing my 'Starting Storage' and realizing how much was taken up by media, I made a commitment. While simply deleting what you don't want is effective, consider offloading your vast photo and video libraries to cloud services like iCloud Photos (if you pay for storage) or Google Photos, or even an external hard drive. This way, you still have access, but your Mac isn't bogged down. I found a lot of duplicates too, which were easy to get rid of once I started looking. And a super important, but often forgotten step, is to 'Empty Trash' frequently! It sounds obvious, but those files aren't truly gone until you empty it. I’ve been guilty of letting my Trash pile up, only to realize I wasn't actually freeing up space. Seeing my 'Ending Storage' after a good clear out (like going from 153.64GB down to 145.88GB in the example) is incredibly satisfying and motivates me to 'Do this frequently'. Keeping your MacBook or iMac decluttered isn't a one-time task; it's an ongoing habit. Setting aside a little time each month, or even just once a quarter, to do a quick review can make a world of difference. It keeps your machine fast, your mind clear, and ensures you always have space for what truly matters to you. Happy decluttering!
