You did nothing wrong

As someone who appreciates CG Drews' storytelling style, especially in books like Hazelthorn and Don’t Let the Forest In, I was curious to see how 'You Did Nothing Wrong' would measure up. Unfortunately, my experience wasn’t as positive as with the previous titles. The novel carries the hallmark of a horror book, fitting perfectly within the #horrorbooks genre, yet it just didn’t captivate me the way I expected. One aspect I tried to focus on was the character development and atmosphere, which are often strengths in Drews' writing. However, in this book, I felt the pacing was uneven, and at times the story left me wanting more depth and engagement. This led to me not finishing about half the book, which is rare for me with Drews' novels. Despite this, I acknowledge that horror is a subjective genre; what doesn’t work for one might totally work for another. The title itself, 'You Did Nothing Wrong,' along with the themes explored, carries an intriguing premise and moral complexity—qualities that often make for compelling horror stories. Even though my personal reaction was lukewarm, I can see the potential appeal for readers looking for a new twist in horror fiction from a New York Times bestselling author. Continuing to follow CG Drews' work is a must for me, as every writer evolves and explores different narrative avenues. If you enjoy horror and are a fan of Drews’ style, I recommend giving this book a try but be prepared that it might not have the same emotional or suspenseful impact as some of their previous works. Sometimes finding gems within horror means sifting through more polarizing reads, and 'You Did Nothing Wrong' may be one of those divisive works.
