I’ve learned that the key is to keep things realistic and flexible, rather than aiming for a perfect plan. For example, planning meals like garlic butter steak with potatoes, creamy Tuscan chicken, or BBQ chicken flatbreads helps keep dinners varied yet manageable. One thing that really helps is building the week’s menu around what’s easy to shop for and prepare, while factoring in your family’s preferences and schedule. I also find it helpful to think of meals that can be easily adjusted — like having a salad bar option when you’re short on time or craving something lighter. This flexibility keeps everyone happy and reduces stress. When feeding six people, portions matter, so planning recipes that can be stretched or combined with sides like fried rice or roasted vegetables ensures no one goes hungry. Using recurring themes such as Mexican nights with chicken chorizo burritos or Sunday roasts creates anticipation and simplifies shopping lists. Lastly, I don’t beat myself up about changes. If plans need to shift or you don’t feel like cooking a particular meal, it’s okay to swap days or opt for something easy. Meal planning isn’t about being perfect — it’s about making sense to your family and lifestyle, keeping dinners doable, and feeding everyone with less hassle.
