I’m awful at meal planning.

Like… truly bad at it.

Having had bariatric surgery, I can’t eat large portions, I should be prioritizing protein, and I want meals that don’t feel sad, repetitive, or overwhelming.

But somehow I still end up staring into the fridge like it personally betrayed me 🫠

I also rely heavily on easy additions like steamed or roasted vegetables, which can be varied to keep meals from feeling repetitive. When planning your week, aim to have a few go-to breakfasts such as protein smoothies with added spinach and nut butter or scrambled eggs with avocado. Lunches and dinners can revolve around lean proteins paired with quick sides like cauliflower rice or mixed greens. Incorporating low-effort snacks like cheese sticks, boiled eggs, or almonds helps maintain protein intake and keeps hunger at bay between meals. Another trick is meal prepping in bulk on days when you have more time. Preparing protein portions and some veggies ahead allows assembly of meals in minutes, making it easier to stick to appropriate portion sizes without feeling overwhelmed or bored. Lastly, I’ve learned that allowing flexibility and forgiveness in your plan is crucial. Some days, a protein bar or a simple salad may be all you manage — and that’s completely okay. Don’t hesitate to reach out to communities of others on similar bariatric journeys, as their shared tips and meal ideas can be invaluable. Overall, prioritize protein first, keep meals colorful and appealing, and develop a rotating list of simple meals and snacks that you enjoy. With these approaches, meal planning transforms from a stress-inducing chore to a supportive tool in your health journey.
