SANITATION ✨🤍
It's something we often overlook, but the sanitation of our makeup kit is just as crucial as the products we choose. I used to be guilty of just letting my brushes gather dust, thinking a quick wipe was enough. But after a few skin breakouts and realizing how quickly my expensive cosmetics seemed to go bad, I started taking makeup hygiene seriously. This 'sanitation edition' of my beauty tips is all about helping you keep your beauty tools and products pristine, protecting your skin, and making your makeup last longer! Think about it: every time you dip a brush into a product or apply makeup to your face, you're transferring oils, dead skin cells, and even bacteria. Over time, your makeup kit can become a breeding ground for germs, leading to skin irritations, breakouts, and even infections. This is why understanding personal cosmetics sanitation is so important – it's your own mini 'cosmetics industry sanitation' protocol right at home! My Go-To Routine for a Sparkling Makeup Kit: Brush Cleaning is Non-Negotiable: This is probably the most impactful step. I aim to wash my foundation and concealer brushes weekly, and eye brushes every two weeks. For powder brushes, monthly is usually fine. I use a gentle brush shampoo (baby shampoo works wonders!) and warm water. I swirl the bristles on a silicone mat or in the palm of my hand until the water runs clear. Then, I reshape them and lay them flat on a towel to air dry overnight. Never dry them upright, as water can seep into the ferrule and loosen the glue. Sponge Sanitization: Beauty blenders and sponges are notorious for harboring bacteria due to their porous nature. I wash mine after every 1-2 uses with a solid soap cleanser, really working it into the sponge until all the makeup is out. Squeeze out excess water and let it air dry completely. Replacing them every 1-3 months, depending on usage, is also a must for proper hygiene. Wipe Down Your Palettes and Compacts: Don't forget the packaging! I use an alcohol wipe or a cotton pad with rubbing alcohol to clean the surfaces of my eyeshadow palettes, blush compacts, and powder cases weekly. This removes fingerprints and any residual product or oils. For powder products, you can gently scrape off the top layer if it looks gunky or has a hard film. Lipstick and Liner Love: For lipsticks, especially bullet lipsticks, I gently wipe the top layer with a tissue after each use. If I've been sick, I'll even spray a little alcohol on a tissue and lightly dab the lipstick surface to sanitize it. Sharpening lip liners and eye pencils regularly also helps keep them fresh. Mascara and Liquid Liners – The Exception: These are tricky because of the direct contact with your eyes. Never add water to mascara to thin it out! This introduces bacteria. The general rule of thumb is to replace mascaras every 3-6 months. There's no effective way to truly sanitize the wand without contaminating the product. If you experience any eye irritation, toss it immediately. Beyond Cleaning: Storage and Expiry Dates Proper storage is another critical aspect of makeup kit sanitation. I always keep my makeup in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or humidity (which means not right next to a steamy shower!). Using clear acrylic organizers not only looks pretty but also helps me see what I have and keeps dust away. And finally, expiry dates! Many products have a PAO (Period After Opening) symbol – a little jar with a number like '6M' or '12M'. This indicates how many months the product is good for after opening. Pay attention to these! Old makeup isn't just less effective; it can be actively harmful. If a product changes in smell, texture, or color, it's time to say goodbye, even if it's before the PAO. By incorporating these simple yet effective steps into my routine, I've noticed a significant improvement in my skin's clarity and my makeup products last much longer. It’s a small effort for a big return on your beauty investment and, most importantly, your skin's health. Give your makeup kit the sanitation it deserves and enjoy a cleaner, healthier beauty experience!
